K&N air filters?

K&N air filters?

The truck I just bought has one on it. I heard they are not good for diesels because of the oil on them.
True/False
Any gains by switching to a BHAF, or should I just not spray the oil on it?

I don't know that the oil would hurt a diesel, GM says an overly oiled aftermarket filter can cause problems with your mass airflow sensor on your GM product(Gas). BHAF is far cheaper than the K&N setup, got around $100 in mine with filter,D-plate shield, outerwears and looks good.....I think.

K/n

I have a K/N filter in my 2001 and I have not had any trouble. I check the filter every time I change the oil in my truck. When i clean the filter I just give the filter a light coat of oil. I also check the turbo and I have not found any oil build up on the turbo impeller. I have had the filter in my truck for two and half years.

Do a search - this topic has literally been beat to death and there are still varying opinions. Its your truck - run it if you want. As for me, the K&N I had on my last truck went in the garbage.

Probably true. But if I already had one, I would not be opposed to keeping it.
Biggest problem with the K&N is over cleaning and over oiling, IMO.
I would consider a BHAF a step backwards, if you ever intend to add HP!

I have 200K miles on a K&N. If you aready have one you are good to go. Just don't clean it too often. The dirtier it is the better it works.

Over oiling the K&N is a myth. I'm sure you can over oil it, but we are talking about 1/2 teaspoon of oil at the most. That is NOT going to cause problems with a CTD. The oil most guys see is from the turbo.

Almost 12 years and over 400k combined miles on both my K&Ns. I don't even pop the airbox open unless the filter minder says it's time or every 100k. To do otherwise is counter productive even with a stock filter.

My feeling is the only people who have problems with K&Ns are the ones who don't read the directions that come with them or people who have never owned one and who are just parroting something they've read on the internet.

I've seen more problems with BHAFs than K&Ns. It makes me absolutely sick to pop the hood on a rig I'm going to work on and see a BHAF with a big gap between the filter and intake tube caused by a slipped hose clamp or filter media falling apart from water. The BHAF type filter wasn't designed to be used in an application under the hood of a truck. You mainly see them connected upright to a steel tube on top of a stationary engine installed inside a building.

Thumbs up for the K&N stock replacement. No issues what-so ever. I think about 100k is about the time to clean them.
I think the stock box is OK, no water issues, decent air flow to it. I suspect this is OK up to mild BOMS/MODS. Just use some wheel bearing grease around both sides of the filter on the edges. This will form a tight seal.
It is easy to check how well it is doing when changing the oil, take the turbo boot off. Makes getting to the oil filter easier, about 1 min. to do.
The K&N stock replacement is about $70. I got mine used from a dude who got the big K&N setup. He said he spent the $250 or so for 20% more airflo, his opinion.
Lots of opions here!!
I think you have nothing to lose with the K&N. It is your least expensive option.
