Good safe timing bump for basic power mods

I'm going to have the timing set on my truck, what would ya'll recommend having it set to? This is for very basic mods just a #10 plate and a gsk. I'm going to be moving to the northwest so the truck will see some cold(er) weather than what we have here in NC so I still want easy cold weather starting.

Thanks for any recommendations.

Dennis

15.5-16* is working amazing for me - nice bump to mileage. 700 miles to the tank around town with the air on.

16° is the ticket for good starts and mileage. Not too aggressive.

15-16° is perfect.
Higher increases risk of head gasket blow out.

I have been thinking about changing the timing on my 96 but have read that it could hurt the low end torque I am concerned about towing. Any input on this?

Higher the timing less low end torque. Basically moves the powerband higher up in the RPM range with every degree added. I've ran between 15 and 22*. Higher is more fun to drive empty, but ticks me off towing. Lower is better for towing without a doubt.

The timing bump will not destroy your bottom end. Again, a little more fuel takes care of that problem. The change is not as drastic as its been said.
