Think if I were to do it I'd skip the already cramped underhood and rig one to run off the pto.

I have a couple York compressors and I already found room under the hood of my 12v to mount one. i just need the time to make up the brackets. I'm working on some critical landscaping of the yard of the house we are buying right now, so its on hold for a while.

I like the PTO idea if you only need air when the truck is stationary, but I want mine to keep a tank filled so I can use air horns and an air operated exhaust brake, so I need continuous air.

Jim, the pto will work whether your moving or not, it's speed will just vary with rpm.

Nothing else available for a CTD comes anywhere close to the air delivery.

EDIT: I was wrong, it's only a wimpy 70cfm, up to 175psi
Thanks but only 70 and not the 75! forget it !!! Thanks though

I talked to Mr.Kilby this morning and he said the reason that they don't offer a kit for the 12v is because the alt. bracket is cast as part of the block. On the 24 valve it is removable and the mount bracket bolts in place of the alt bracket and the alternator is relocated. He said it can be done but he hasn't spent enough time with one in the shop to develope a bracket that he felt was sturdy enough to hold the compressor. I think any inginuative individual could, with enough time, get one mounted to a 12v. I'm leaning towards the vmac compressor now.

True but most pto equipment is not designed for road speed. It would be more expensive and the straight cut gears would drive you up a wall.

We have a number of the V-Mac units at work. They are great on our tire trucks, and small water meter trucks. But they take alot of space. they are an oil fed compressor so there has to be an air/oil seperator mounted under neath the truck.
I have the Kilby set up on mine. It handles my impacts, air drills and grinder. I also have 2 auto leveling valves on my air bags and air horns. I really like the service I get out of it.

If someone needed occasional air, or small amount of it, you couold wire up an electric compressor from a Caddy that had air suspension. They are durable compressors, but don't put much CFM. By adding an air tank (larger the better), you could run air horns, an air operated exhaust brake, and fill airbags. You could even power an impact gun for short bursts, like for changing 1 or 2 tires. But it would take a while to get the pressure built back up. Pros: Cheaper and easier to install, do it yourself in a quick afternoon. Con: Slow to build pressure (low CFM). Just another alternative to consider...
