Edge Boost Elbow ?

What are the pros and cons of installing the brass elbow that comes with the edge Module? Instruction say its optional and works equally well with or without it. Seems like if you had to go in for warranty work you'd need to remove the brass fitting also or it would be a dead giveaway. Any performance or mileage differences? I leaving mine at the level 3 for now. Thanks

Re:Edge Boost Elbow ?

Install it! Its there for a reason but the truck WILL run without it, just not as good. It raises boost which gives better combustion and lower EGT's. You cant run the elbow without the box or you will get a high boost code.

Re:Edge Boost Elbow ?

some additional comments:<br><br>1. Katoom is right about the boost levels, but I'll just raise a technicality here: the elbow itself doesn't &quot;raise&quot; boost -- fueling does that. Its just that the stock wastegate limits boost pressures by re-directing the hot air (generated by the Edge box fueling) out the tailpipe instead of driving the impeller. the purpose of the elbow is to raise the wastegate threshold so that the hot exhaust gasses are used to generate higher boost, rather than just wasted.<br><br>2. running the elbow without the box does not necessarily set an overboost code. Without the box, the stock ECM will de-fuel when boost gets high, and if in response to this de-fueling, the ECM does not measure a boost decrease, then it will set an overboost code. Seems that Alpine posted that explanation a while back.<br><br><br>my comments regarding the original question are:<br><br>1. yes, if you take your truck in for warranty work, and if they see a modified wastegate (the elbow) they might (doesn't mean they will) slap a restricted warranty on your truck. you are your own warranty station; you play, you pay, and various other expressions... <br><br>2. I have yet to experiment with this, but from a theoretical standpoint, katoom is right about the potential for lower EGTs and better combustion with the elbow in there. So you should feel the difference too. When I get my guages installed I'll have some fun experimenting before I put my boost elbow on! <br><br>3. From my experience, if you run empty you won't have any problem running the Edge box without the elbow. I'm doing that now. the risk is higher EGTs of course. I won't tow anything until I get my pyro installed!<br>

Re:Edge Boost Elbow ?

There are no cons, install it. I've ran my truck without the box, and didn't get an overboost code.

Re:Edge Boost Elbow ?

I've got a comp (elbow installed), 275's and a scottyII and on level 5 you can hit 1200 degrees pretty quick even when the trucks empty .... be careful if you got no egt gauge

Re:Edge Boost Elbow ?

I think you can only install the boost elbow on the manuals, not the autos. At least that's what I think I remember Aaron at Edge telling me. That's why mine is in a little plastic bag under the seat still....<br><br><br>Tony

It fit's the Auto! I have it installed on mine. Now you are talking about the Brass fitting with the little tiny hole in it??? If so it fit's just fine! Now if it work's or not, That's a different story! I don't have a boost gauge, so i can't tell you.

Re:Edge Boost Elbow ?

Where do you put the brass elbow in on the autos? Mine has the hardlined wastgate and there is no where to put that little brass elbow. I like the turnbuckle better anyways. I have a little control on the boost.

Re:Edge Boost Elbow ?

Your right, the opening in that brass fitting is tiny. According to the instructions you're removing an existing fitting and replacing it with the one that comes with the Edge box. I'll assume it has a different size opening. Mine is an automatic - 48RE. Thanks

Re:Edge Boost Elbow ?

Its not only that the brass elbow has a tiny hole in it, its the little hole on the side thats important. It bleeds the air back out of the wastgate. I belive there is a one way valve so the boost doesnt go out the side hole. This is important because it allows the wastgate to function propery. Unhooking the wastgate can mean less power for some, not all.<br>

Re:Edge Boost Elbow ?

I installed my elbow when I got the EZ. I never ran my EZ without the boost elbow, so I don't know what kind of numbers I would have seen with just the box. But I can say that my boost increased after installing the two.<br><br>Before installing them, I could get my boost up to about 19 lbs. I could never seem to get the dial all the way to 20. After the install, 25 lbs. is pretty easy to reach. It may do more.<br><br>With no other mods on the truck, I thought that was a pretty impressive difference for that little brass elbow.

Late model autos have a HY 35 which have a hard lined wastwgate. Turnbuckle will work, Turbomaster is a sweeter way to do it.<br>Tim

Re:Edge Boost Elbow ?

The boost elbow works like this: In the stock piece of brass you have a direct conection from the intake to the wastegate. This connection has a quite big diameter. Therefore pressure is equal from the intake to the wastegate. The Edge elbow works in 2 stages. First there is a little opening from the manifold to the chamber in the elbow and then there are 2 holes in this chamber, one going to the wastegate and one bleeding off the air. Since the feed hole is very small only a certain amount of air will flow into the elbow, some of it will exit into the open and the rest will build pressure on the wastegate actuator. <br><br>HTH<br><br>AlpineRAM
