Comp and egt's

I finally got the chance to turn the comp up after the clutch was installed, and I can get the exhaust temps to 1500 (thats where I stoped). Does this sound about right. Also it seems to take quite a bit longer to get to 300 before I shut the truck off.

Thanks Joel

Yea you can hit 1500 on 5x5. I have to really stay in mine to hit 1500 you might want to straight pipe or go 4 inch.

??? most I can hit on mine with the comp and rv275's is about 1300 for a couple seconds ........

that's with the truck empty ........... never tried while towing

I got the scotty II with the hole and a free flowing muff at the same though ........ maybe they make more of a difference than I thought ..............

The exhaust is already straight piped. I noticed the other day sometimes even on the lower settings there is a haze of somke coming from the tail pipe under wot. Could my turbo be going bad.

Possible, but doubt it. Check for free spinning blades and for "play" in turbo shaft: should not be more than 1/8" but will always be some.
I get same haze sometimes..never have figured it out..and I have plenty of air?
Hasn't hurt my mileage and I do have slight intercooler leak which could be causing haze due to overheated (thin) turbo air and incomplete fuel burn. You might make sure all 9 clamps are tight on air system.

RJOHNSON,
how can you tell that you have an intercooler leak ? Is that something you can hear, or see a crack? I was a bit suprised being that your truck is only two years old, but then again maybe due to certain mods?

Moose 10

Factory intercoolers are only built for 30 lb of boost, according to Piers & Van Haisley. Most hold up under lots more - but not for ever. Mine lasted 6 months. I pull 50 lbs and due to excessive EGT's suspected an air leak.

You pull boots off the turbo and the air inlet into block. Plug one end and pressurize the other up to 20-25 psi and see if it holds. If not - squirt soapy water all over and look for bubbles.
I had leaks on one stock boot and on intercooler at air exit tube.
Changed boots for Piers HD Boots and air noise (which had snuck up on me) was cut in half and boost came up much quicker.

I found it interesting that when examining the leaky boot (lower passenger side) could not detect any holes-by stretching it over my fingers. Rod at Wildcat told me the factory Hump Hoses expand about 1.5-2" at 30 lbs boost!

This is what is so great about this site...so much to learn. Thanks for the information. I actually print out a lot of this stuff and keep a 3 ring broken down into different sections which sits on my workbench.
I had no idea those stock boots could expand so much. They seem quite strong to me, but I guess not. It would be cool to mount a video camera under the hood during a test drive......hmmmm
I can't wait to get my guages in....

Moose10 - Suspect those boots wear out from constant expansion & contraction. Remember, they were only designed for 20-25 boost pressure.

OldSmokey - Was thinking about "haze" on way home. Long story short-have noticed for a while, my truck seems to run better at 3/4 throttle than full. Remembered something Rod @ Wildcat told me and did an APPS reset (Throttle Position Sensor). Only had time for short test drive this morning but full throttle now feels great and (point of all this) - Black Haze seems to be gone! It's a simple process - you might want to try it.
If not familiar-see "Tech File" in header.
