adjusting stock governor springs???

I've heard talk of & read about cranking down the stock governor springs, has anyone tried this & how much does it help, I was told I could get roughly 2600 good fueled rpm's vs. the 2150-2250 that I see now, my truck will rev to 3000 rpm's or a touch higher, but the good hard fueling stops at around 2200 give or take a couple rpm's, I plan on adding a 4k rpm kit w/valve springs soon, but in the mean time I thought I might gain a little from this, and if it's a fairly simple job I might run outside & give it a try, thanks for any info, Dusty

You have to do pretty much everything but swap the springs to mess with the stockers. It's only 15 minutes less work than doing the GSK install. I would throw a 3k kit in instead of messing with the stockers. Just check with your vendor to see if they will sell you the inner spring for the 4k kit later once you've done the valvesprings. Or throw the 4k kit in and watch the tach until you get the valvesprings in.

Exactly what he said

I have the 4K minus the springs, (retainers and keepers with springs will most likely be next BOMB after DV's) I got mine from Mike at hotroddiesels, heck of a guy to work with and its only five bucks more than the actual 3K kit. GO FOR IT! u wont be disappointed.. My understanding is that if you mess with the stock springs, you can only free rev a little higher, because of the no tension change or very light tension change, it wont affect your fueling at all.. or minimally at best

originally I put two clicks on the stockers. It would free rev to 3100 and while driving with the right eye and watching the pyro with the left eye I noticed defueling to start at about 2600. It'll get ya a few 100, but it's not the cleanest fuel. With the true GSK, the full fuel is much smoother. My main reason for the tweak originally was to get away from some serious hang-shift with the auto....which it did. Now with a 5sp I find I run out of rpm before the engine is really ready to. It's gonna be the 4k soon for me, just for those occasiona when I wanne stretch the motor out a little.

Ya, pretty much you get 100 rpm per click, but it starts having idling problems after 3 or 4 clicks. It was done to my work truck, and it helped a little; but nothing compared to what a 3k GSK would do. For the cost to get a GSK, it's not worth all the trouble to just tighten a couple clicks. Although, you can tighten the springs by going thru the top if you take the plate out. It's a lot faster than going thru the side plug. If budget is the limiting factor, you may as well go thru the top & get 2-3 clicks(remember to do both spring sets equally). Idle speed may need to be readjusted.

Here's a site that helps with locating everything, so you know what the nut on the spring looks like if you go thru the top. Finally, 1 "click" is a quarter turn on the nut.

just for fun i pulled my 98 apart the other day. and i took a 3/8ths flat washer and drilled a 1/2 hole in it. i put it under the retainer and put it all back in the stock location. pulls over 3k and cost nothing. another free fun toy from gunracer1.

There's always a way to do something for free on a 12 Valve! Gotta love it! I'll have to try that on the ol' DT466.
You got the right idea too, and for others to note: get a washer that doesn't involve the big outside spring, that's your idle spring.
I need a test bench with a couple pumps to play with!

I think gunracer should post this DIY mod as a seperate thread so everyone can know about it. I just put in a 3gsk kit and did not know you could bypass the largest idle spring using a washer.

Keep us updated as to fueling etc.

Right. Check the dates/times before you post something like that- he did it after I asked him to in a PM.
