question about these governor springs

no offense guys but i find that paying 150 for a pair of silly springs is ridiculous 30$ at the most...in that case...my question was whats so special about these springs? cant we just get the equilavent type springs somewhere? whats the size of these things and the tension/strength? pick em up at a hardware store ya know??

im not trying to rip anyone off who made these things but lets try and save a buck

I think the fact that they are so precise is what makes them expensive. one or two clicks in on a retaining nut and your motor is running 200 RPMs faster, that should be an idea of how much precision is involved in these motors. You get what you pay for these days...

just take the pump apart and slap some washers in where the springs were, and hope it don't have a run-away when you start it. if you run you'r poor ol cummins to 4 w/o letting off, i say your purro crazy anyways.i drove my buddie's truck with 4-k gsk's and i never got over about 32-3500. i don't think they make much ower above that because of the duration of the cam and stuff. i havn't got my truck runnin yet and havn't driven one enough to really KNOW, but i'd say power drops off pretty good at 3500 therefore you don't need a rev limiter. i am going to take my pump all apart and look at it real good, and if i can just put washers instead of gsk's, without it having a runaway i will do it. don't bother me to save a few pennies to go toward injectors or turbo

Research is costly and time consuming. Also a companies neck is on the line if they put out an inferior product. We are placing our trust in a company by purchasing items that have been fully tested and engineered by them. I understand paying $130 for some springs and a little OD/ID spring pad is allot of $ for what it is. But they also field a tremendous amount of phone calls whether or not we bought parts from them. I called Piers after I put my kit in and they were friendly and helpful. That’s worth allot to me.

i hear ya i hear ya.....i just wondered if anyone actually knows what they're putting in their trucks (the springs) whats their tension? their size? know what i mean? because springs are springs and u can find springs elsewhere if u know what ur looking for......springs arent mind boggling id just like to know their description/calibration

its like with the plates most people buy the first one and then play with their stock one to grind it to whatever pleases them

I am sure you won't complain about the money spent once you install them. They are not simple springs from the hardware and they come with customer support and good instructions. Get some and you will only be mad at D/C for not having them in it from the factory. just my .002

You can play with the stock springs a little bit but your idle quality may suffer as well as your "return to idle"

As said these are not hardware store springs but I agree there probably isn't more than $15-$20 in parts in a GSK. It not just R+D but overhead that we as the consumers are absorbing in the price of a product and if you are a small business owner you know that overhead has gone up considerably over the last few years.

when you get a 3 or 4 gsk, it does seem over priced while it is in your hand. but when you put it in a truck it will seem like a bargian. i am going to do some playing around with some spacers in my wifes truck and see what i can get with the stock springs and some shims. but i have put in 6 sets and they have all been worth the money. and with the high speed screw removed and a 4 k kit my truck will turn 4800 or so when doing a burnout.

I'm sure the springs are made especially for the application and not for anything else. Much like the spring in an overflow valve. I searched like crazy for a source of OF valve springs which should cost like 5¢, even with the specs I had no luck.

thanks guys...u never know unless u ask right? i read a lil thread on here that the piers springs are a pain to install compared to the TST. also someone mentioned to me a while back that if i have the 160 pump then i might as well get the 4k gsk because i wont go over 3400 anyway

should i simply start with the 3k? and get a 10 plate while im at it?

I'm sure TST would ship to Toronto but PDR (aka Piers Diesel Research) is located in Canada so you might be better off buying from a company located in CA to avoid any excessive taxes? Just a thought as I am really not sure how all the taxes work for you when buying stuff from the US.
