6spd to auto tranny swap

Thinking of doing a 6spd swap for auto tranny. Buddys of mine have auto trannys and can pull away from me with only a ez box. What will I be getting into. If anybody has done this please E-mail info to help out. Working on parts list.

I am slightly interested in this as well, but from past posts, everybody always recommends selling the truck and buying one auto because it is pretty involved.

Just shift it faster!!!!
No NO NO, do NOT convert to an auto!!!
Do you know how hard and long some people look to find a stick, let alone a six speed??
It would really be taking a step backwards IMHO
there are a blue million auto trucks out there, find the one that suits your fancy, then be prepared to beef it up!

Unless you're totally granny shfting this thing, you should be able to whup on them with a comp set up high, vs and EZ. Are you sure they don't have injectors as well? They could be sneaky buddies ya know. also, do you have the pump wire tapped?

If you want it for racing, you're better off to sell it(or just keep it and buy another one) , and buy an auto(but you will have to spend lots more money to hold extra power). A stick is good for strictly towing applications, but can be a pain in daily city driving. Can be costly to convert yours to auto.

I've had both, and both are good for different applications, I prefer a built auto for most uses(even fairly heavy towing), but it's your choice. Drive it for a year or so, and see if you like or hate it by then, and then decide where to go from there.

A stick is harder to shift fast to keep up(and because you lose boost in between shifts), so you can either start in 2nd or even 3rd when racing(1st is too low), but watch out for burning your clutch .

Man, if you were crazy enough to do this (nothing personal, just myopinion on the swap) I might be interested in that 6-speed! You have no idea how badly I want to get rid of my auto...if that gives you any idea on how far backwards you would be going!

i dont know the auto is nice for drag strip but i dont use it all the much for towing and would really prefer the manual for the long hauls i do and the every now and then towings...........if he is looking to get an auto my tranny will more then happy hold the power of his engine and i would just do a 1 for 1 swap since everything will bolt up except the floor cup holder section... this way we can swap pedals.. steering colums... and all the rest.....

I would rather have a stick tranny, because at some point I'd like to buy and backhoe and I assume I will be burning my tranny out towing it..but not if I get a manual transmission.

Need12v is right,it took a little looking to find the truck in my sig in a 6 speed. We found a few 5speeds,but would of liked the 6 for towing the 12,000 pound trailer. When towing it gets going in 1st,around town it gets going in 2nd or 3rd depending if i stopped on a hill or not.My truck can keep up with other dodges that are auto, its all about the shifting.I have yet to master it,but my dad can shift the CTD with out a clutch most of the time and their is no grinding just falls in smoothly.I say stick with the 6spd if you want an auto trade the truck in,I think you would have a hard time getting rid of the 6spd if you did the swap cause how many stories do you hear of one of those trans blowing up?...

Well reading the experience of other guys who tow for a living, reinforces my beliefs to stay with a manual for real work. Autos can be built well for racing, but if you are towing a lot, stick with a manual. A stock manual will by far outlast a stock auto. And for the price of a built auto, you could buy several good clutches for a manual, and still tow better than an auto. You also don't have to worry about trans temps.
