24 valve Straight Pipe

I have a 01 and I'm thinking about cutting the muffler and cat off, is this a mistake or will it improve my truck performance?
My other question is without the muffler is the truck going to be way to loud ?

Cutting off your exhaust and cat will improve performance but not noticeable. Its all on preference on loudness. I have grown up around loud cars with the old Hush Thrush( some you older guys might now about those) and flowmaster and some trucks with nothing but a turndown pipe or on a gasser just 2[sup]1/2[/sup] straight pipe. As long as you take your pipe to the rear axle it shouldnt be crazy loud but you might have to shut your truck off at drivethru's to order. ;D Just unbolt it and see how you like it. Also take out your silencer ring if you havent yet. You will be turning alot of heads when you WOT. ;D Have fun.

SD03

Re:24 valve Straight Pipe

I just cut mine off two weeks ago and replaced it with straight pipe. I have not noticed any difference in preformance. Maybe just a hair cooler EGT's but that could be my imagination too. I love the sound of it. I do have some pretty serious drone at around 2100-2200 RPM. That bothers some but I like the sound of it. She really bellows when I get latched onto my camper and boat at the same time! ;D ;D
I put the BHAF on last night and noticed about 100-150 drop in EGT'S

It will lower your EGTs just alittle cause you have more of freeflowin' pipe. But to helkp with the drone put your pipe to the back axle so its not as noticeable cause sometimes the drone will put you to sleep if you have it right underneath the cab.

SD03

Oh, on your 2001, you don't have a CAT.
It's a "resonator", added by Dodge to reduce the droan at certain rpm's.
(they got rid of the cat's in 1998.5 with the 24valve engines)

It won't be loud at all, until you tow something, or punch it next to a wall of some kind ;D .

I removed the muffler a couple of months ago but left the resonator in.
I haven't noticed it being too loud at all.
I am careful not to step on it too much next to officers of the law though, just in case.
Plan on going total 4inch system sometime in the future, after I've started BOMB'ing, and when funds allow.

phox

Yea I overlooked that Phox is right thats a resonator. Only the 12v's had CATs. But take your Muffler and your RES. off ad see how you like if you dont like the drone just put the RES. back on.

SD03

Re:24 valve Straight Pipe

get the Muffler Elimination kit from genos. the resonator does add a little to quiet the exhaust, but it's still loud with it installed w/no muffler. have fun, roll the windows down and crank up the heat if it's cold weather ;D

Tom
