For those who've gone from 3" straight to 4" straight...

I'm going to get a 4" exhaust and am wondering if I should just straight pipe it. When I first put the 3" pipe on I thought it was super loud. Now I don't even hear it. But I'm reminded how loud it is when first timers ride in it with their window down next to a fence or building. Most can't understand the appeal If I have the windows up, a/c and stereo on it's barely noticeable.

So on a scale of 1-10, 10 meaning your ears will bleed, how much louder is 4" straight pipe?

Also how bad is highway drone?

If I can find a 4" muffler that doesn't take any benefits of 4" away, but puts out the same sound level as a 3" st. pipe, that would be perfect. Or if a 4" straight isn't much louder I'll just go with that.

I have 4" turbo back no cat no muffler and I think it sounds AWESOME!! It is louder than the 3" but not that much more. The main thing you get with the 4" is of course more flow but also cool EGT'S which is GOOD!!

Highway drone is there, mine gets pretty noisy inside the cab but for me I love it. I hate not being able to hear my exhaust!! I would for sure recommend it though, it will sound great especially with your 5 Speed

If you are worried and such about having a muffler order the sneaker series from rips! I am going to get a 4" ASAP but first I am getting my Gauges and Van Aaken, and then the 4'' will go, since I will have to baby it around for a little while with the 3" to watch my EGTs and scuh!

I built my own 4 inch, but i dont really think its much louder than the 3 inch, and as a matter of fact it could be quieter. The bigger pipe you go to the deeper the sound will get. Not nesecarilly louder. I have 0 drone or highway exhaust noise in the cab. I can hear it when i want, and its quiet in the cab when i want. If you wanted, i could get a sound clip of it, but I cant host it, so if you could find someone to host it, i could do it.

4 inch sounds better. The tone is deeper, so it actually sounds quieter. A turndown tip helps too.

The reason mine drones is because the tip is under the body a little bit making it drone the way it does. I guess it's all opinion whether it's louder or not, I happen to think mine slightly is comparing it to a friends with the same exact setup but 3" instead of 4". But that's just me.............loud stereo's may have gotten to me finally . WANNADIESEL is right about the turndowns, they do help quite a bit, I'm just not to keen on the looks!!

cumminsdriver635 you can upload it here: http://www.yousendit.com/ put in my email steve.lyon@qwest.com. I can download it from there and check it out.

From the comments it sounds like the 4" may be a little louder, but it sounds better. I'm definately leaning towards the straight. If I don't like it, I'll make myself like it

Mufflers are not required for smog here, so no worries there.

I could see how turn downs help. Straight out the side and it bounces right back at cha!

A turndown tip will deffinatly cut the drone down.

I was amazed at the difference in the sound with the pipe ending under the bed. I pulled everything aft of the resignator and drove it for a week. I could not drive at 2150 RPM the drone was so bad. It would go away at 2300. Then I put the rest of the pipe in and connected the two with flex instead of the muffler and it is the same as before in the cab. With my new injectors it does make more of a bark when I step on it.

I think the 4 inch is quieter because the tone is deeper and much more pleasant. With the stacks though you do get drone at around 2000 rpm, so I just run 2200 and above on the highway and presto, no more drone!!
