Angry its GONE ALL GONE

this isnt quite drivetrain....so i hope this is ok?

our truck just lost its clutch!!!!! it has 78k on it and this kinnda pissis us OFF! the only pulling it has done was the man before us pulled 5th wheel campers from AZ to ME untill the truck hit 13k then he bought a 2x2 so he could pull the campers from the south better and had a 12 speed put in for better MPG.
so now at 78k the clutch just blew, the stinkin thing hasnt even been pulling for 3 months now and the only thing we pull on a reg bases is a 14ft job trailer!!!
we had the truck pulled ($400 ) to the dealler to see if it was under warranty--it isnt cause its not drivetrain---good enough but they want over $1300 bucks to do it!!
this is what they said to my father "do you pull with this truck?" he said "ya a small trailer."......"oh thats prolly why the clutch went."

so i guess what this means is if you want to pull a 14ft tool chest you gotta buy a freakin Peterbuilt!!!!!!???????

Man that is really sad. I hope you can find some one other than the dealer to install a clutch. I would think that would be cheaper than $1300.

If you are going to have to replace the clutch I might be tempted into looking into a better clutch. We use the South Bend clutches here with great results. No difference in feel really from the stock one compared to the performance.

You don't give any specifics about your truck, but if you're gonna spend $1300, you can buy a SBC (South Bend Clutch) Con OFE and pay to have it installed - probably with money left over.

Since when was the clutch not part of the drivetrain?

A clutch disc is normally considered a wear item like brake pads. IIRC, after 12 months or 12K miles, you're pretty much outta luck with clutch replacements under warranty.

Exactly. Thats the way its always has been. It dont matter if its a fart cart omni or a big 3500 dually clutches are a consumable item.

Oh I'm not arguing that point. That's understandable. But since when was it not considered part of the drivetrain. I'd be a little suspicious if my dealer told me that.

Oh, OK, I see your point. Yeah, there's a big difference between "Sir, your clutch is not covered by the drivetrain warranty" and "Sir, your clutch is not part of your drivetrain".

It would be sad to spend that much money at a dealer, and still only have a stock clutch!

Sounds like the guy before was riding the clutch while loaded...In no way should the clutch burn out at 78k.

on my 97 the clutch just fell apart at 40,000 with my dad driving all of that. granted he was pulling a pretty good load but in no way did he ride the clutch excessivly (sp). I had a buddy with a 98 24V in about the same situation you are in. From my understanding the stock clutches are crap.

My personal beef with the stock clutch assembly is that the cheesy 3/4" diameter pilot bearing seldom lasts the life of the clutch. From what I read here, it seems that most of these assemblys get replaced due to failure of the disk or pressure plate; I don't think I've ever heard of one slipping to the point of failure. I pulled my clutch out after it had been in there for two years, and the disk still had the imprint on it from the factory stamp, and most of these miles are loaded as per my signature. So yes, it most likely was being ridden...be interesting to see what it looks like coming out of there.
