Wow Time Has Really Passed When

You turn the news on and you find out it's Ringo Starr's birthday today......and he's 70 years old!

For those young in's who don't know who Ringo is:
he was the drummer for the Beatles,......and the Beatles were a band from England.

I had enough problems just dealing with having a president who is over six years younger than me.

Don't remember exactly what I was doing when I first heard their music, but I do remember taping them on a cassette (anybody remember those) and sticking the tape recorder in my car for my friends to listen to. At that time there were no car cassette players. That car was a Jaguar Mark 7. One of the worst cars I ever owned.

My first 8-track was the Beatles Revolver which I already had (still have) on LP. Thought it was so cool to drive around with the guys, listening to the tape over and over again "blasting" out of my massive 4 watt car player.

Where'd you put the player? I've heard there isn't much of a dashboard in the first Model T's.

I had a Craig PowerPlay 8-track, underdash. It was the stuff man. I actually remember telling a guy when cassettes first came out, that "they will never replace 8-tracks, because you just can't get the quality sound out of them". Probably the single dumbest thing I ever said.

Hmmph.. It was a 63 Rambler--one of the finest cars ever made. Puts a Yugo to shame.

I must have had a little better hearing then because 4 watts seemed to sound great at the time.

I got pretty good at fixing the tapes after they would "throw up" tape all over the floor --esp if it was cold.

Friend of ours bought one used (good deal!). He tried to replace the engine with a Chevy engine and tranny because parts were so spendy. He got it done and running than found out the rear end was shot. Got that fixed and it burned up in his driveway from an elect problem. Pretty cool looking car though.

The first custom sound system in my 65 Mustang I had was a 45-RPM record player, it played the records upside down, then I had a big chrome 4-track Craig tape deck that took most of the passenger side, when that got stolen I bought my Muntz Blue Light 4-track Player it was connected through a Motorola Vibrasonic.

When I finally bought my Craig 8-Track, I had to get the little "Gidget" thingy so I could play all of my old 4-tracks.

Sgt. Pepper, the Doors and the Hollies spent a lot of time in my car between cruising for chicks and then a date that night at the $1.50/ carload Drive-In Movies.

In my 70 Mustang I went real HiTek and bought my Ampex Casette player.

I was over at a friends house and we were talking about back in the early 70's when we were both working in radio. He's still a disc jockey as well as the station music director. His grand daughter was talking about Paul McCartney. I mentioed that I liked some of his music like "Live and Let Die" and "Band on the Run". She asked when those songs were made and he said it was when he was with his band Wings. His grand daughter (who is 16 by the way) got big eyed and said "You mean he used to be in a BAND?". I felt incredibly old at that time.

Back around 1980, I was running a salvage yard and bought a 1957 Dodge Royal out of a barn. It had the "Hyway HiFi" record player and several of the 16 rpm records in the trunk. I got it running and washed it and sold it for $3000 after buying the car in an estate auction for $50.
