me4osu- We don't use them on landfills. (nasty things creeping around there... ) Over here we are obliged to separate waste material- biodegradeables are fermented to create biogas. some nice reactors though. Fat which is not fermented is usually removed from the fermented material, mixed with other fats and oils, then processed (methyle esther) and used as a substitute for diesel. Works like a charme. (Over here diesel is at 3,20 US$/gal )
AlpineRAM

Ya know- I don't have to breathe it--- ;D

Still its a smelly affair. But the exhaust gas from the engine gives less greenhouse effect than the gas from the landfills. So getting cheap energy and doing sthg good for the environment..

AlpineRAM

I guess the fuel prices are not high enough yet to make it pay out.

Well sometimes I read your fuel prices and start thinking about moving. Fuel has always been expensive over here. That's why there are so many European cars with really low gas consumption.
Personally I think that using all the energy stored in waste is something nice. Especially if you have seen the water around older landfills. Lots of grease inhibiting self-cleaning of the soil. I prefer to have the stuff used before going to the landfill. It's true that you can catch the gas from the landfill, but if you do so, the landfill will suck in air. Let's see- several thousand cubic meters filled with a mixture of methane and air- I think this spells "KABOOOM" if things go bad. So we do some reactors- meaning airtight decomposition units with bacteria, put in al the biomaterial, let it sit and get the gas. The residues are removed and stored in the open to rot away- Voila- we have energy and good soil.
AlpineRAM

I'm a Missile Maintenance Technician for the Army National Guard. Work mostly on anti armor systems with an extra dose of air defense and laser stuff.
Spent 9 years in the Navy with most of it in subs. Did have a couple of tours riding gunboats. Spent the last 25 years as a missile puke in the Guard. In my weekend warrior role I'm the Operations Sgt of the Small Arms Readiness Training Section trying to teach some of these idiots how to shoot. Some of them couldn't get in the black with 12 guage, 3" magnums, #4 shot at 25 meters. It's scary to think the powers to be believe we can keep these kids proficient shooting 40 rounds per year. It won't be like this in 1 year, 2 months, 20 days.
