We live in a larger log house that 2 woodpeckers have found fun to peck at. problem is, their drilling holes everywhere. Im not ready just to shoot them and get it over with, BUT woodpeckers are fast. Anyone have any suggestions to getting rid of them that works?

Owls and hawks. Plastic ones are usually available at farm supply stores.

 

Rubber snakes too.

 

Since your not ready to shoot them, get a friend with a shotgun.
The plastic owl worked at my sisters.

 

Realize that if they are making holes, your logs are full of bugs. Get the bugs taken care of, or your log home will be eaten from the inside out. Several home recipes using Borax have been written about over the years, which will kill and prevent reinfestation of the home. Woodpeckers don't normally peck for the heck of it, except in mating season, and that is past.

ditto on not shooting the wood peckers. They are your best friends since they alerted you to a bug problem. They would not be pecking if your home wasn't infested. Get it taken care of or you wil have thousands of dollars of damage in a short time.
Secondly, the plastic owl is available in the Garden Dept of Walmart, it works great. Put it right where the problem is the worst, and maybe on a opposite side of the house as well.
It doesn't have to sit on a ledge, you can hang it from the eave.

The other bird that pecks looks like a woodpecker, but is a sap sucker. These peck straight lines, row after row, in tree trunks to allow the sap to run out, then visit later to run their tongues in and out of the hole to gather the sap, and any bugs like ants that get trapped. They usually don't bother homes.
You can put up a long sheet of aluminum sheeting, to avoid damage and they will give up in short order. But one way or the other, get the problem fixed.
