R&R Fuel pump on camaro

My friend has an old 1985-86 Camaro with a 305 in it. It's got a mechanical pump on it. I got the old one out and got the push tube pushed up as far as it will go but I can't seem to get the new pump on. It feels like the plunger on the back of the pump and the push tube are interferring with each other but I just can't tell. All I know is that the bolts are incredibly hard to tighten. I quit for the night but I need to know how to put this thing in so I can get her car running tomorrow. Thanks for the help yall.

There is a bolt in the front of the block you take out and put in a longer bolt to hold the push rod up in place until the new pump is installed, then you put the short bolt back in the hole. otherwise you will probably break the pump housing and possibly bend the pushrod.

Ahh. I knew there was something I was missing. I had to remove the plate behind the fuel pump just to get the pushrod pushed back up into the block. Funny the instructions with the pump never mention that bolt. I tried barring the engine over like they said to see if it moved up any and it never moved up or down. Oh well. I was changing it in the shop parking lot so I'll let them replace the dang thing. Boy am I glad my fuel pump is mounted on my frame. Lot's easier to get to.

Well the mechanic took a look at it this morning and found out that the reason the push rod for the fuel pump isn't moving is because the lobe on the cam that operates it is shot. This engine has over 200,000 miles on it. So my friend is just gonna pull it and install a 350 in it. Thanks for the help yall.

Not really. You see a lot more mustangs than you do camaros up here. But a lot of the f-bodies you do see are wicked. Or at least they sound that way.

If the eng runs good and the rest of the cam is good, you can put an electric pump on the frame and call it a day.
The camaro's and stangs have been popular for a long time. My son is putting his 350 stroker in a stang, just for kicks. After all, what is the spirit of hotrodding? Doing things that aren't supposed to be done!!!!

We thought about doing an electric fuel pump but figured that since she was gonna swap the engine out in a couple of months anyways then she might as well go ahead and swap it out now.

Makes sense to me. Are you going to go thru the eng and "spruce it up"? Dome pistons to get 9.5-10:1 CR, Dart Iron eagle heads with 2.05 int, bigger cam and int, etc.???

HAHA!! I wish. I'm not doing the engine swap. Way to many things involved. I can do a lot of things but this is one of those things I would rather let a mechanic do. Now maybe one day down the road...
