Propane filling questions....
I have a buddy that has a special burner on a 5 gallon propane tank. The tank has a special valve that the burner screws on to. This valve is the older style and they won't refill it anymore even though the original tank is in really nice shape since it has been indoors it's whole life.
Is it possible for him to have a newer tank filled and then transfer the contents to the original tank? Legalities?

you might be able to have an adapter hose made at a weld shop that will allow you to connect the burner to the new style tanks..
a that same weld shop might even sell you the parts to build your own.

the "new" tank should have the same inner threads with the addition of the outer thread. home depot, or lowes, TSC anyone can swap to the newer tank for like $3-$5 extra. all the "new" ones have a triangular valve handle.

Yes you could fill the old tank from a new one. I don't know about the legal stuff. Need an adapter hose that fits the new full tank and connects to the old tank.
Open the valve on the old tank, and the 80% valve. Invert the full tank. Open the valve. The pressure in the new tank will force the liquid propane into the old tank. The open valve on the old tank will let it vent the pressure.
When the trasfer is complete, close all the valves and disconnect the hose.
We had a propane powered van. That is how I would put fuel in when it run out of propane. More than once I got a call from one of the kids where that van was setting out of fuel.
IMHO it would be easer to get the new tank with the correct fitting.

The problem with the original tank is that the valve is special. Instead of the outlet coming out the side it comes out the top and it has a 2" threaded flange for the burner to mount to. This is all cast into the valve.
I wish I had taken a picture... If I can't find a replacement OPD valve then I guess we will have to try the refill route.

1. Change the valve on your tank to the new style.
2. Adapt the threads on old valve that came out of tank to fit the new valve outlet.
3. Use old valve adapter to hook it all together.

It's a plumber's pot. A good welding supply or propane company can get him an OPD valve for it. Look in the yellow pages under welding supplies and you'll find somebody who can retrofit his tank.
