The Veyron engine's W16 construction keeps length to a minimum but not the power - 1001hp or about 750kW.

MONEY DOESN'T MATTER: VW, owner of the Bugatti brand, admits the Veyron will never make a profit - it's being built for brand prestige.
But it's still a high $$$$ Volkswagen.....

and I want one............

How Stuff Works has had an article on that piece of Eurotrash for a while now...

http://money.howstuffworks.com/bugatti.htm

Well, since I feel really anti-European right now, I will proceed to put this lemon where it belongs.

To begin with, the piece of junk only makes 987 American horses, not 1001. Yay, the thing can make as much horsepower as a stock Cummins 6BTA block. Only this engine's bigger, has more Cylinders and is endlessly more expensive. And for those of us who care about real power (i.e. TORQUE) the engine makes 922 foot pounds. Only 922 foot pounds. 922 foot pounds. With 4 turbochargers, 8 air coolers, at 8500 rpm. 922 foot pounds of torque, 987 ponies. And yet it only manages to make 16 PSI at very top end, with only a 9.3-1 compression ratio in order to ensure the bubblegum engineering doesn't break. The basic design of the engine minimizes any kind of actual performance; in order to operate they had to lower the compression ratio and boost pressure to the point that it doesn't burn any performance fuel, and therefore can't make any real power when you consider what its actually doing. What a piece of Euroriffic garbage.

So, it has a top speed of 253 miles per hour. So it can go as fast as a Cummins in a Dodge Dakota. (Only the Cummins spins at half the RPM). Congratulations to Bugatti. And it has a quarter mile time of, get this, 10.8 seconds. 10.8 seconds. THAT SUCKS! There are PICK-UP TRUCKS that can blow this things doors off. Silly silly Europeans.

I guess they say that a lot of the price tag went into "handling" or "stopping" ability. But as Americans have said for over 100 years, "what kind of wimpy excuse is that?". Phmp... Handling and stopping. Yeah, like that matters. If you want to stop get a parachute, and if you want to handle get wings...

Ultimately Bugatti has developed a vehicle that costs $1,125,000 and will make you the laughing stock of the banker, the drag racer and the salt flat runner. Please, keep this kind of stupid-investment-banker-needs-to-show-off kind of garbage over in Europe...

I don't care that it's a useless, overpriced, over-hyped VW.
With this engine......

I'd still want one, if only to pop the hood and gaze at it.

or try to figure out if I could shoehorn it into a Gremlin........

The engines that really impress me are the original Hemi's of the 50's and 60's, the 5.9 Cummins, and the Allison aircraft engines. The w-16 sounds ok till you read the price tag. I wonder what it sounds like? Maybe a suzuki 2 stroke? ring-a-ding-ding-ding???? Definitely not roaring thunder!!!
