I think I may have a different approach than most of y'all. I've attempted to lend my truck out in the past to my friends. I tell them one thing: "If you break it, it wasn't built good enough. However, you agree to fix what you broke with parts that are better than new." It's worked so far... knowing this truck's track record with breaking things, only one person was brave enough to borrow it for a night.

brandon.

I'll borrow it Brandon, but you'd better hope you remember everything you've done to that engine, 'cause you'd be suprised how fast two rednecks with hotwrenches can take apart something

I do need to look at a few things on it though, my new turbo's laying on the floor!

As far as not letting anyone drive my truck, I wish I was that lucky (company truck ) That's why I added the valet switch. If you can hurt it without that thing on, it was gonna break anyhow.

I am pretty selective of WHO I give the okay to, though. So far, it's Me, my Brother, my Uncle (who used to have a 2000 24v), a retired guy who helps us on the side, and a chick I know from high school that drove it home from a pull one night.
I know, I know, I guess I had a weak moment, but she did really good as long as she didn't need to downshift , Ooof!!

Well guys, here's the update. Talked to my BIL tonight, and looks like we're going to do a road trip last week in March. My wife and I are canceling a week in Tennessee to do this, but I'd much rather do this and help him out than leave my baby in the hands of the unenlightened for a week. (He drives a half-ton gasser)

Thanks again for all of your thoughtful replies!

I let a friend use mine to pull a 5ver with advise on the safest and best milage tips. It came back very clean and got the best milage its ever gotten with a high load. Anyone that has pulled a bumper trailer will find it very easy to handle a 5th wheel.
Here's what I would do;
I'd have him drive it empty down and make him buy you a one way ticket there to drive it back together. That way he knows that borrowing your truck comes with a price tag and you don't have to waste as much time away and still get good guy points for helping out your family. Be sure to have him leave his BEST vehicle with you when he takes your baby.

My dad always saId he needed two of every thing - one to keep & a lesser one for lending out.

I SAY "NEVER EVER LEND OUT YOUR CHAINSAW!"

Don't loan family money! Truck is the same.

The ride aint bad, I just got back 20hrs down, 22 hrs back (loaded). Then the truck sat it the garage for two weeks, too much driven!

Just ask him to front the bill. (fuel, food, oil change) Did the trip for under $500
Just have fun.

I should add that I loaned my 01 Ram to a friend one time. His truck was in a hit and run and his daughter needed to be at a function in a city a few hundred miles away...last minute thing.

Truck came back empty, broken windshield, chocolate bar wrappers under drivers seat, stereo settings all changed and the big one I found about a week later...
Chocolate milk spills all down the inside of the rear seat pockets and in between the center seat and drivers seat...sticky smelly mess.

The least he could've done was fill it up as it was full when he left and arrange for an interior cleaning.

I guess I'm fortunate. My local brother-in-law (the others live in Illinois) won't speak to me unless he has to. Also, he thinks my truck is too loud (as if that's a bad thing). So I don't have to worry about him asking.

One thing I learned from an old guy a few decades ago was "There are three things you never loan:"

Your Wife/Girlfriend
Your Tools
Your Truck

You never know what condition they'll be in when you get them back - IF you get them back.

My grandfather had an old chainsaw that wouldn't run as his "loaner". Nobody ever got hurt using it.

I'm with the rest of you. When I had my old '85 D250 gasser I'd lend it to anybody to do anything. Now people who want to borrow my truck get me, too.

Just curious.
What is he going to pull his new trailer with when you guys get it back home ?
Cant he find a good Fifth near home ?

Takes some major Cahonies to ask someone to borrow their truck to do just about anything.

Hope all works out well for you.

Dustyrock: He's parking it on some vacant land where he's helping his son build a new house. After that, I don't know.
