Now Big Brother Wants Seat Belts for Dogs
Ultratrendy, ultraliberal, ultrawacky Santa Fe is considering requiring seat belts ... for critters.
A City Council committee in New Mexico's capital yesterday endorsed an ordinance that would require any animal "in or on" a vehicle to be restrained.
Among the options for pet owners, the Associated Press reported today:
A "pet safety sitter" ($13.69 to $21.69) that straps Fido's chest to the seat.
A restraint with a loop that attaches to a seat belt.
"Pickup tie-outs" that attach to Muttley's collar to keep it from jumping out of a pickup's bed.
A little booster seat so Puff can see out of the window.
For once cats will get equal treatment. Under the scheme they, like dogs, will have to be leashed whenever on "public" property
Okay thats just way to Left. Hey Maybe Kerry can use it in his bid for Prez?

Big brother or people tired of giving all their money to insurance companies because of others mistakes? If I see one more dog on somebody's lap going down the road, I'm gonna blast him. "Gee your honor, I thought the dog was attacking him."

If you ever see what a small dog (aka canine rat) sitting on the back seat will do to driver or passenger in an accident you'll see the merits of restraining them.
But lots of people have heavy objects in the back of the car unsecured and get them on the head or neck even in light accidents.
Over here you aren't allowed to transport live animals in a way where they could form a distraction or impede vehicle control.

Shooting the critters would really help in some cases. Shooting the owner even more

I could see in bed tethers since we do see a lot of dogs laying on the freeway which probably jumped from the truck. My dog just curls up on the floor in the back and sleeps so no one would even know he's there unless they come near the truck, has been like that since he was a pup, never wants to drive.

Hmm: An ideal society wouldn't need any laws that define the obvious. IMHO our civilisation is somewhat reducing common sense and the ability to think in the masses so the lawmakers have to keep up. And this leads to a dowmward spiral.

I have always had my dogs harnessed in the truck. They both know that when the harness comes out they are going for a ride. Prevents them from being ejected if a rollover occurs. Call me left or whatever you want, I think it is a good idea. If people just used their brains and didn't have Fido on their lap this issue probably wouldn't come up. But we gotta remember this is America. Brains sometimes seem to be optional...

Alpine is right...more and more these days the gov't HAS to think for the people otherwise the people will get hurt in some way, and then find a way to sue other people because of their lack of common sense? Come on now!
