I also have to agree with the general consensus. I have 4 brother-in-laws who I trust with anything I have!!!! I love these guys as if they were my own brothers! But I have to admit that I'd feel alot better if I was to go with them on a trip like you're describing!
Just the fact that we belong to sites like this one shows that we take a special interest in the maintenance and general well being of our trucks as compared to the average vehicle owner!

No and Well No! My dad wanted to borrow mine and our 18-ft. car hauler. I told him I would take him but he could not use my truck, He was a little miffed but he got over it.

Nobody borrows my trucks, nobody borrows my big trailers (except for the one time I let Jack borrow the gooseneck - but I reckon he is a reasonable exception) because nobody I know has a gooseneck hitch, but I will haul it for them if they are a good enough friend and I have time.
My questions would be more about this unseen fiver that he has spent money on. How old is it? Are the tires and bearings up for a 2K mile trip? Do the lights and brakes work properly? Is he prepared to fix anything that may need to be done before he drags it that far? Even if I was going with him there would have to be a serious discussion about the things that must be checked prior to it being hooked up to my truck. I would hate to have to come to an agreement about what to do AFTER someting breaks in the middle of nowhere.
Diesel trucks, especially modded ones, are not your "just get in and drive" vehicles. Granted, they are the best choice for towing, but the towed equipment must also be a match for the tow vehicle. And the steering wheel actuator had better not be afraid of the combination or it is an accident waiting to happen.

I need some confirmation on a decision that I'm about to make:
My brother-in-law bought a used fiver that is in florida and wants to borrow my truck to go get it. We both live in Michigan. He's never driven a diesel pick-up, much less one with mods like mine, and he's never pulled a fifth wheel trailer before. As far as I know, the biggest thing that he's towed is a utility trailer behind his half-ton Chebby. He's a great guy, but I am just not comfortable lending my truck to someone who has no experience. Thanks guys, for all of your input. You've just confirmed what I already knew. My B-I-L and I get along great and we do things for each other without hesitation, but I agree that this is just over the top. I'll cancel my vacation plans and go with him, but he won't get the truck...without me.

that drive my truck are me and my dad, NO GF'S no females, and definately no family of any sorts, sometimes they are the people you can trust the very least... I agree that diesels are no big deal to drive, empty handed.. HOWEVER with a trailer, or with mods or in your case both, its out of the question.. No you cannot borrow my truck.. plain and simple.. why? its too far a trip.. and because i need it.. plain and simple... then again im very cold on that subject so... you might not wanna take my word for it, but if it breaks im sure he aint gonna wanna pony up the dough to fix it.... or come up with some Edit excuse that it was already breaking... both of which ive heard before.. and dont really like...

I've never been comfortable with loaning my truck out. Generally, I'm glad to let anyone that needs it use it but by using the truck that means they get me too....and I drive. I'm sure your bro-in-law is a great guy, but I think I'd have to either go with him to get it or just tell him you don't feel comfortable with it....especially if he's never towed a trailer that big.

Just tell him your concernse but mostly just try and point out that you want to go and would be more than happy to do so. 2K miles on a CTD means nothing so I would just do it. If he's a decent guy he'll realise he owes you a favour in the future. But I totally feel your pain, i wouldn't send my truck off on a hauling trip without my being there either. Plus it will be an excellent learning experience for him.

My best friend asked if he could borrow my truck to go pick up some furniture. In the past I had always said sure, but my other trucks were gassers.
When I told him no, but I would be happy to take him AND help him load it........ He got kinda defensive about it. He said, "Geez, it's only a truck"
Kinda irritated me, but I can see where people thing we are "weird" about our trucks. LOL
An example of what happens:
I dont lend my tools to ANYONE. Way I look at it is, if I can buy it, so can you.
But one day our next door neighbors, young newlywed kids, came over and asked if they could borrow my pressure washer. I told them I didn't like to loan tools because they are almost always brought back damaged in some way or another........ They got all sad faced and hurt about it. So I said Ok.
Two hours later, the wife came over and said she was just using it and all of a sudden it blew up! She said she didn't do anything to it, it wasn't her fault!
To make a long story short...... The next day they were outside with a brand new pressure washer and I am still sitting here with a broken one.

My truck takes special handling anyway because of the concrete bedliner. In general, I'm willing to loan anyone I know just about anything I've got. Heck, there are certain people that I'd feel pretty comfortable loaning my truck out to. But, as I said before, generally if I loan my truck out then I'm coming with it. Aside from Dan239, I haven't had anyone turn down the free help yet.
