looking for info. on a gas powered log splitter. what is desireable whats not? i have rented one splitter for one day. gas powered 27 ton. worked great. now am in the market to get my own. what is the best for home use. i don't need one that will splitt 100 full length logs is 1 hour but i don't want a little electric one either. whats the minimum to get something decent?

got a good deal for a buddy a few years back, bought a used rental unit, still has it made his money back many times over.... if ya know the guys at the rental place it help alot..... other than that get as heavy a tonage/ hp you can afford vertical if ya don't want to lift each and every log to the top of the rail..........

 

Super Split! don't go hydro go with a super spilt. I've got one, if you use a super split you will never go back to a hydro. We've had it for 25 years and used it to split 8 cord a year. Its got a 5 horse honda on it. Never had a log it wont split. Befor you buy a hydro go check one out, you'll buy it!

Like the man said, get one that will sit vertically so you won't ruin your back by lifting two foot diameter logs. The main thing to consider is how fast can you feed the splitter without working yourself to death. I bought one from Sam's club for about $1100 to clear up after a hurricane a couple of years ago. It was a 27 ton unit and it worked great. I sold it after the cleanup and I now have a five year supply of firewood. The same splitter now runs about $1395.

I would say a 20 ton 5 HP is the minimium you would want and it will split just about anything. I've sold firewood for several years and this is what I started with, until I decided to build my own with a log lift and 4 way wedge to speed up the process.

 

We bought one outa Harbo Freight. Needed it to clear tree's and it was the same price to buy as it would have been to rent for 2 weeks. It was a nice 20 ton splitter with a 5 horse Briggs and Straton IC engine. Would split 4 foot round red oak tree's all day (till we ruptured the steel hydrolic line) but after replacing that with thicker stuff we were good to go. We've split over 100 cords of wood with that sucker clearing our lot in PA and it runs like never before. I think the seals in the handle are leaking now but that can be replaced fairly cheep. I think we paid 700 for ours (about 7 years ago) It's been good to us. Mostly get one you can afford, you can always put a better motor, cylinder on later. As long as those two parts are good, everything else dosn't matter.
