First, the time and manpower to run a set of prints through AFIS averages around $1500, so for most minor( under $2000), its simply a matter of using YOUR tax dollars wisely.
Second the time taken to collect and process teh prints means that there are more serious crimes waiting to be processed while they deal with yours...

and despite what CSI shows, usable prints are recovered at less than 20% of all crime scenes on average, so cut the cops a break...

By taking the serial numbers, they are entered into the National Crime Information Computer(NCIC).. any officer across the country has access to that system, and its routiine to run the serial numbers of any type of "questionable" electronics equipment....also most states require pawn shops to turn in a weekly list of "high-theft" items which are then run thruogh NCIC, and you would be amazed at how much stuff is recovered that way...

just FYI......

I had a stereo stolen from a friend's vehicle near my house. She had one installed with black tape (I did the install and didnt know the error of my ways back then) holding the old and new wires together. When they uninstalled it for her...the wires looked like they were still taped. The officer did dust for prints. No luck.

In the city of Cincinnati, they wont even come out to do a report. I had a stereo stolen (not even a good one) and I saw where the kids were headed. Nope...we dont waste our time...call the automated line and we'll ship you your police report in X days for your insurance company. I understand if they were busy telling me no, but they dont even check. Second time I caught the same kids within a 3 week period breaking into my car. Second time the thing didnt even have a radio. Still...no officer response to take descriptions or anything. Needless to say I dont live within the city limits anymore.

the cops around here do not do anything but take breaks my buddy hit a parked car one night and it took the cops 3 hours to get there (they were on a break) it seems to me the cops dont really like doing anything like that because they can not make any money from it. there is no benieft to them for responding to a stolen radio. cause they wont find the person that stole it and they cant write a ticket or arrest someone.

What's the difference between a sketcher and a thief? A thief will steal your stuff...a sketcher will steal your stuff and then help you look for it! Sounds fishy to me, especially leaving behind the other easy pickings.

The proof is in the baseball bat . Seriously though don't do anything that will get you in trouble. Someone keyed my mom's car when I borrowed it one night (she was using my truck) and we know who it is. So far I tore their driver's side mirror off their truck, but I made sure to do it at night.
