Fast and easy way to clean carbs on a 2 st outboard?

Is there an easy way to clean the carbs on a 80 HP 2 stroke Mariner Outboard, short of doing a rebuild?

Mike

Would it be possible to run some of that fuel injector cleaner for gassers through it? I mean the stuff that you hook up to the fuel system and run the motor. I just got done cleaning my three on a 70 hp Johnson but still can't get it to run like it should.
Tom

Get the motor running and hot. Stop it and drain the fuel tank and fill it with only about a gallon of fuel then mix in a quart of auto tranni fluid. The hot motor and full carbs will make it easier to start because it will not like this new mixture. It may cough and smoke a lot but the tranni oil should clean out a lot of junk. Run it for about 20 minutes and then run some of the normal mixture thru the carbs. Don't let the tranni fluid sit in the carbs or fuel lines.
DISCLAIMER: On some carbs the tranni oil may cause some rubber to swell.

I've had good experience with a product called B-12 Chemtool. Ran it through the tank about 500 miles before I tore the carb on my old Dodge down, nothing in the bowl but some old sediment, the throttle blades were so clean they were shiny on both sides, every surface that was in contact with fuel was clean. Never seen such a clean carb in my life.

Thanks all. As I looked closer into this project, I just used some Evinrude fuel conditioner. But before I ran it again, I found the book for it. I found out it was running with L76V spark plugs instead of L78V plugs in it. Now it sounds alot throatier with the new plugs and idles a little higher. I will run 24 gallons of fuel with the conditioner through it, then I will adjust the mixture needles (2 carbs). It had a tune-up about 3-4 yrs ago and I imagine when they put these colder plugs in it, they adjusted the mixture accordingly.

Wannadiesel-Will the B-12 Chem tool work with 2 strokes?

MNtom- Was first thing I bought, but the Mariner does not have the schrader to hook those cans up to.

Thanks, Mike

Go to the boat shop, get two cans of Mercury Power Tune (If I rememver right, that's what it's called). Start the engine and run it up to operating temp. Throttle it up and spray the Power Tune into the carbs until it dies. Let it sit for about 30 minutes, then fire it up and blow it out.

This stuff is specifically made to clean the carbs, reeds, and carbon deposits out of the motor......

Re:Fast and easy way to clean carbs on a 2 st outboard?

Various products that are designed to spray into a carb while the engine is running work well FOR THE SURFACES THEY CONTACT. However it does nothing for the inside of the float chamber, jets etc. That is why I prefer something that goes thru the entire system. In severe cases it may be necessary to go both routes.

Mike-
I'm sure the Chemtool will run through there fine. Make sure you adjust the dosage for your tank size, I think the can is sized to treat a 12 to 20 gallon tank.
