yamaha 2.5hp 4stroke outboard

Alright we bought 5 bumper boats with that motor on them. They are governed somehow. I figure its gonna be mechanical, but not shure. Does anyone know anything about them or been around a governed one? I want to get max rpm and spped out of these. We are haveing a party on the 14th so we need to get them ready. The specs for the motor says it peak power is 4500 - 4750, The ones at ammusement parks sound like they dont go much more than1200 rpm. Any suggestion fo more hp and speed is appreciated.
Rob

I wish they were diesel it would be so much kooler stacks and black smoke.

I don't know that particular model, but most governing is done at the throttle. Take the cover off and look at the throttle linkage where it attaches to the carb. Does it turn almost 90 degrees? If not it can be "adjusted". Sometimes you grind a stop, sometimes you replace a throttle cam.

That little trick is often the difference between a 9.9 and a 15 HP motor for instance.

Just check to see if the butterfly is opening all the way and you'll know what's happening.
