even the plain people run with cummins

Had a flat today, just down the street from a tire store. Limped on in and parked right next to a big black dodge with 19.5" wheels pulling a big flatbed trailer (missing some parts of its tires). After I got buisness squared away, I decieded to find out who owned the black beauty, and strick up some conversation. Looking around all I saw was a couple of amish (or meninite) fellas sitten around. I went down amongst them and asked if they had seen the owner of the truck. The pointed to another amish guy standing a few feet away talkin on his cell phone!! After talken with this fine group for awhile, it turned out that they new their stuff about the good ol cummins. . Really nice bunch. maybe they want to join our local DTR? We would shure welcome them.

I found it interesting to learn that some congregations allow diesel engines but not gasoline. The diesel does not rely on spark for combustion and is therefore OK. : About 3 years ago I passed a family in a diesel Cutlass Ciera, black with all the chrome painted black. Was the Dodge blacked out?

They are more than likely Menanites (sp). They are allowed to have some modern conveniences (phones, indoor toilets, vehicles etc ...) unlike the true Amish.

I used to see a crew of Amish carpenters cram packed in a suburban with a non-amish driver. He couldn't see out of the rear view mirror through all of the big brimmed hats .

PISTOL

these here must be technologicaly advanced meninites, as they ALL had cell phones (which rang several times while I was there) and a sweat shiney ride. They all wore the tipical appearal though, and had the funny accent.

I talked to one of the younger fellows and he seemed to know his stuff about bomb'n. He liked to stroke his tho , but said his cousin had a cummins with a blue chip. I couldn't really talk with the owner of the truck that I saw as he spent most of his time on the cell phone. All I saw was 19.5" wheels

And there's a few whose wives say "If the Big Brown Truck drops off one more package from a Diesel Performance Company it means it'll be the end."

Do they like to BOMB?

Not sure if they like to BOMB, but they do know about HORSE power. Where I'm originally from in fact, most of their vehicles had one horse power.

Yeah, they know about BOMBing alright...

They get those high-tech, hot-rod blinders for their horses (keeps the horse from getting distracted during drag races).
And you know the orange safety triangles they have on the back of the buggy (for slow moving implements)? it's just to lure the competition into a race. Then they pull out the "competition" whip and it is all over but the crying ... exhaust all over the road, white knuckles and puckered (well, you know ...)

"Hang on to yer bonnet mamma ... when we cross the finish line we're gonna party like it's 1899 !!" [eyecrazy] ;D

PISTOL

Re:even the plain people run with cummins

MOSTWANTED, you are quite correct. One reason I live where I live now. Years ago, in another life, I lived near a Mennanite community. Used to shop in their farmers markets. Good stuff there and reasonably priced. The Mennanite butcher sold meat that was guaranteed drug free and it was consistantly tender, juicy and tasty. My mouth is starting to water just remembering how great all this was. Sure, we joke about them riding around in one hp carriages, but in reality, who has the last laugh?
I watched them on one of their barn building jigs. A really huge barn went up in 3 days!!!!!!!! Completed, painted, everything. Can we do that? Not without megabucks and lots of ulcers. Whenever I am in their area I always try and time it for lunch. The Mennanite restaurants serve huge meals that are delicious!. Their pies and desserts are unbelievable. Nobody walks out of their restaurants. You sorta roll out. Or is that waddle out?
Yes indeed. Those folks really do know how to live! You city slickers in comparison only exist.

Mexstan got that right!!

Stopped in Amish country (Lancaster County, PA) last fall on the way through that area and, at the behest of a fellow CTDer, timed my trip to catch lunch at the Good N Plenty restaurant. My wife can cook, but even she was impressed with quality of the food (and I with the quantity ;D ).

I can see the allure of that way of life - heck, I grew up out in the country and am planning on getting back there one of these days.

(Theme from Green Acres starts going through my head )

Re:even the plain people run with cummins

Only trouble is that it is so commercialized. Many years ago I used to drive charter bus and got there often, Penn Amish Country. It always struck me as a way of life that used to be but now is mostly for show and commercial enterprize. What really is the difference between diesel, gas, or a buggy with turn signals and a battery to use em. So they pump their water with two wires from a wheel at the stream, its still mechanicial. Are you going to tell me that they cook all that food at the big tourest restaurants with no electricity? Of course not. It is good food though and nice people although they have a bad rate of leaving with the young people.
