Because we don't allow users to place ads or refer to ads in the forums. That's the whole purpose of the classifieds section. That includes signatures and posts. There is a link to your classifieds in your profile beside each post that you make, and if people want to buy something, then they'll go to that section to look for interesting items.

Seen a few too many forums become flea markets.
For Sale here, Wanted there.
Hard to weed out the informative posts between all the ads.

Not to mention, advertising is reserved for those that pay for the privilege, money that keeps the site free and running.

If I understand the question, He is referring to advertising on here that he has something for sale in the classifieds. I enforce the rule "no advertising in signatures except for paid DTR vendors" straight across the board. This also applies to placing a post about and item you are selling on the forums.

While obviously if you are selling a used flamadigit, it would have no effect on the fine people who pay for the right to advertise here, but it then places me in the position of deciding who's ad would be OK, and who's wouldn't Not to mention that we don't want the forums to end up looking like a flea market.

So by enforcing it straight across the board, EVERYONE is subject to the same rules, thats as fair as I can make it. For example I had my gun smithing business in my signature, when we decided to go with this rule, I removed it before we even said anything to anybody else.

None of our paid vendors advertises gunsmith work or firearms for sale, but it wouldn't be fair not to hold myself to the same rules as everyone else.

I hope this helps you to understand our policy a little better.

Wait, so by "local" people we mean the other forum users?

I read the post somewhat literally (and logically...) and deduced it to mean that we couldn't advertise something in a paper or Autotrader or Recycler if it was on the DTR classifieds as well...

I thought you guys were whipping out some kind of legaleese or something...

You can do whatever you want outside of here. I'm not sure what local means either. I'm sure nothing is meant by it. None of the DTR staff said anything about "local", it was the original poster asking the question that used that word. Don't know why. Either way it is what it is folks. No advertising in the forums. This one is done. We can argue all day long, but it's not going to get us anywhere because the rules aren't changing.
