The best thing to do is to call your building department and see what they have to offer. Very few jurisdictions have their codes online. Ususally you have to buy the publications.

If you go by the NEC you should be ok. I know that California is supposed to get away from uniform codes in 2007 and go to the international code published by ICC. I have a copy of the 1999 NEC if you need me to look up anything. My inspectors test was based on the 1999 NEC so I don't have the newer copy.

Well we built a garage next to our house. The power to the garage will come off the main service line to the house in our basement. There will a breaker down there, now the panel in the garage, does it need to be a main lug or a main breaker. I would prefer and think that a main breaker would be better since it will be so far away from the breaker in the basement that is feeding it. Need to know so I can buy the panel for the garage.

I'm in the process of putting up a garage right now too. I've looked through the Canadian Electrical Code but find it quicker to just phone the power company and talk to an inspector.

The way that I understand the codes in article 225 and 210 you don't necessarily need to have another main panel as long as the sub panel has between 2-6 breakers and they are grouped in a way that you can click them all off at the same time in an emergency. If you have more than 6 breakers you need a main disconnect.
