Impressions of the Innova code reader and code questions

I just bought a Innova code reader and I just want to say that it works very well and is simple to use. It scans quickly and can display the code #, the number of codes, all/any of the codes together, lets you know if they are pending codes and lets you quickly and easily clear any or all of the codes and turn off the MIL indicator, if required.

That said, when I tried it out, I got one code present: the infamous 1693 companion code!

.....I have no way of knowing how long it has been there and of course no clue what it is implying!.....I cleared it and have since driven about 200km and it has not returned. Is it possible that this is an old code that did not get cleared when there was another code present? I'm not certain but from what I can tell, it is somewhat unusual to get a 1693 by itself? There was no MIL light on with this code......any thoughts?.....Does this mean I have to go to DC to get it scanned for other codes that I cannot retrieve?.....Does anyone know what codes are typically not retrievable without DC's scan tool?
