Another Labtop Question

Not wanting to hi jack the other laptop thread it sparked a question in my mind.

What would you all recommend for a laptop used mainly for school (college) purposes? Dont have a huge amount of extra cash flow at hand so something moderately priced but something that isn't a pig. You know the typical everything for nothing plan .

Check out Circuit City. They have one that is called ACER. Seem to be very solid machines with a nice price. Streetsmoker on here has one and loves it. IF the Toshiba of mine dies, I will purchase one.

Whatever you get make sure it is not one of those piece of nothing e-machines. They don't even get the right to be called a canoe anchor. I would go with the Toshiba or HP.
And also if you go with Circuit City they do no work on them at all. They ship it off. I can't say I am not more than pleased with Best Buy, but they do have techs that can usually fix it while you wait or within the same day if it is a minor thing.

Back when I was shopping for laptops the best price I could find on a new one was Walmart, but the battery life sux. Besides that it serves its purpose nicely. You can find some deals on ebay, but chances are most those will need a new battery

When my oldest daughter started college. We bought her a Compaq. It lasted less than a year and a half. Keys falling off. hinge broken, finally the Mother Board went South. I bought her a Toshiba through a local dealer after he showed me his 6 year old machine. A few months later I bought my next oldest a Toshiba for school as well. They aren't light, but they are very well built machines. Both laptops are over 2 years old now and have not given them a bit of trouble. They are perfect for College. I would recommend Toshiba to anyone, I would buy another in a minute.

I'm still running my Acer Travelmate I bought in January 2001. Besides that it's a pig for today's standards and that the battery is getting weaker (can only work for 45 minutes on battery) I still really like it. I froze it below -25C, left it in the car in summer in the sun, and do generally abuse it on a daily basis. I'd buy another one of them if the need arose. It was the top model then and wasn't cheap.

Maybe you'll learn to spell laptop correctly before you go to college.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600. Its done pretty good, but I have the "n" key that keeps falling off. Besides that one small problem, its served me good the 2 years I've had it.
