Question Will not start

Hope someone can help. I am new to the Diesel seen, I just installed a Cummins 4BT (1990 model) into my 1975 cj-5 jeep. I drove it a total of about five miles on three different days, third time being today I started it drove it 1 mile down the road and shut it off. About an hour later I got back in it to leave and it would not start. I first pulled of the fuel line between the lift pump and the injector pump and there was nothing there. It has plenty of puel in the tank. So put on a new lift pump (mechanical) primed it, still did NOT start??? Any help would be great. Thanks Brock Woods Springfield, MO

How's the filter? Is it possible some 30 year old crap from the fuel tank has plugged it? Next check the shutoff solenoid. If it doesn't click, check for power. You can unscrew the solenoid and pull the plunger, put the solenoid back on then try to start. It could also be that the system is air bound. Did you try loosening the nuts at the injectors and cranking it until you get fuel, then tightening the nuts and trying to start?

BTW, when it was running, how'd you like it? That sounds like a fun combination!

Try pressurizing thes tank, also. Use a small air pump. This will let you check for air leaks.

Air in the lines

I had the same problem with my 91 CTD. The lif tpump failed and I had a leaking fuel line. I got all the fixed, and it still would not start. I had to bleed each of the 6 injector lines to get it to start. This is not a quick process, it took me about a solid hour of having my wife crank while I cracked lines and bled them out. Be sure to pause after every couple of cranking attempts to let the starter motor cool down. Or you'll end up paying even more to get it started again.

Good luck with it.
