fuel plate evaporated!

Need some serious help! Got a 96 cummins, driving home the other night stopped at a stop sign and the truck dies, fire it back up and take and leave the biggest cloud of smoke I have ever seen. So I limp it home blowin black the whole way, good thing no cops around. So I pull the top off my fuel to check the plate, think it was stock first time ever looked at it. It's GONE the bolts the plate everything. Looked down in the whole, fished around with a magnetic wand, nothing came up, of course I dont know how far down they go but I was in the oil sitting in I believe the bottom, question is should I just put another plate on and new screws and call it good, can a shadetree mechanic take the side of the pump off and get the parts out and then put it back together, is there enough room in there for them to dissapear.

Thanks,
Jeff Ketcheside

Bought the truck used, but it ran good till the other day not much smoke, is it possible to run good without it then all of a sudden it runs like crap and tons of smoke. Someone has been in there before so it may be the case.

Thanks, jeff

My guess is that it wasn't there, and that a turbo boot has come loose.
