What is this next to the lift pump?

98 12 v My truck quit on the way to work Thursday. I figure something in the fuel system. Pulled the bleeder out of the top of the filter. Pumped and cranked, no fuel coming out. I order a new lift pump, but when I turned on the key to push it in the barn, smoke came from the whatchamacallit just in front of the lift pump, right where the wires go in on the front side. So I figure I need a new one plus the short harness that hooks up to it. Both connectors are fried, BUT I don't know what this thing is, so I don't know what to order. Any ideas?

Its the fuel heater/prefilter.

Likely water got in there and caused a short. You may have to replace it.

Thats just for the screen/prefilter and not for the heater itself.

Thank You Very Much, You Guys are Great!

My guess is the temp. sensor. It's held on with 2 little screws where the connector is so I guess if I order that and the mating harness I'll be back in business. Guess I'll order the filter parts too since I'm down into it that far. Yes, it is my first post, but with only 180,000 miles I haven't had to do very much to keep the old girl running so far. Next is exhaust, then tranny (auto), after that we might pump things up a little. I do get on with you guys quite a bit and appreciate all of the knowledge.Keep up the good work!

You have to buy the fuel heater/strainer as an assembly. They commonly develop a leak and will suck air where the wiring plugs into the element. A bad connection can actually cause the connector to melt, then they suck a whole lot of air, and the truck quits. That sounds like what yours did. Pull the plug out and have a look.

You are right

This thing is fried. Oily looking. What keeps it from catching on fire?
Picked up up new strainer and heater at my friendly Dodge dealer today because I could not wait for Cummins to order one in. I'm painting it with gold paint because I thought it should be gold plated for 307.00. Add that to the 274.00 for the lift pump. KA-CHING. Maybe I'll get it put back together on Tuesday. Cold and snowing here. Again....Thanks for all the help. Gregg
