Exclamation Uh Oh What have I done?

I ran my pick-up down to about 3 gal of fuel. As I was filling, I checked the oil and looked around under the hood. The dip stick is the only thing I touched though...I swear. For whatever reason the yellow engine light is on. I stopped and made sure the fuel cap and dip stick were in their proper places, as they were. I haven't got a fuel press gauge yet but the truck isn't surging, and it feels to be running normal. What's with light folks? Please help me figure this out.

Like mentioned, fill out your signiture.

If the truck is new enough, you can turn the key on and off 3 or 4 time's, and it will tell you some code's in the odometer window. Once you get the code's, post them here and these guy's will be able to help.

Further to that if it is a 3rd gen also hold the trip meter reset button down and turn the key on. The instrument cluster will go through a diagnostic check, write down any codes from tehre as well.

It's a 01, 2500. Runamuk, I'm the guy you met at Love's in Ripon. I actually got 578.8 miles out of the that tank with the stuff you recomended. I'm nervous though. I was seeing how far I could go, but I don't like running the tank that low.

Okay here's what I found. I looked around on this site. Figured out how to check the codes. I got a P 0460 (Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Malfunction), and a P 1693 (Turbo Charge Control Circuit Malfunction). That is all have found out. Are any of these serious? Like I said before, I don't feel any differance in performance.

53, I am aware that running it low isn't good. I just want to know if it's going to be okay...can I just un-hook the batts and everything be okay/ or did I jack something up?

Ok first off check your fuel filter and fuel filter housing. Running low on fuel could bring all the junk on the bottom of the tank into it. Replace the fuel filter at every oil change is my motto! Fuel filters are only 15-20$

Check the codes with a code reader/clearer as there may be more! Report all of the codes here, and then clear all codes after fuel filter replacement and then drive it around to check it out.

I think that the second code may have been caused by the first. Remember fuel is the life blood of some high $$$ parts. Namely Vp-44= $1200.00 uninstalled.......

Give me a call, you have my numbers, tomorrow and I'll give you more info.

Personally......I would go every 15 to 20K on the fuel filter change unless you feel you've run into some "bad" fuel.

....On your code, that particular one sets when the pcm sees low fuel, less than 15%, for more than 120 miles or fuel level does not change by at least 14% for more than 250 miles. I would be shopping for a level unit which should run you about $40 at the dealer.
