what damage is done?? could be done??
tomorrow i'm going to pick up a 95 12v motor (not sure if its 160hp or 175)
anyways the guy said the turbo is blown and with the turbo being blown it ran it out of oil. motor started making noise and the guy shut it off, its not seized.
so with that being said.... what damage do you think is done? if it was shut off soon enough could it be ok?
the motor is complete minus alternator and starter.... so i could put some oil in it and start it ( i have a spare starter)
i am buying it think that it can either be sold as a complete motor (if there isnt damage) or can be parted out (i need some parts)
so let me know what you think.

Well, if it ran out of oil and started making noise...first things that come to mind are main and rod bearings. After that, crank journals for both mains and rods. If the crank is gouged a reputable machine shop can regrind and polish the journals if the damage is not too bad and even then the crank can be welded and reground if the damage is real bad. That is of course if the crank is damaged. Just about any part that requires lubrication has been compromised from the rings on the pistons to every bearing. There's no real way to determine the extent of the damage, if any, without taking it apart. If there's any oil left in the engine, drain it and look for a milky sheen on the surface to indicate bearings and if parts fall out, well, that's pretty self explainitory. Sounds like a good winter project for yourself or someone who isn't in a rush or has the cash to do it all at once.
