TPS bushing and bracket
TPS bushing and bracket
My 96 2500 Cummins 4x4 w/auto was not shifting correctly. It would start out in 2nd or 3rd. The tranny shop replaced the govn'r solenoid and switch and that solved that. They found the rear end bearings going so got that taken care of. The rear end shop said the tranny wasn't downshifting. Drats!
Sure enough it would start out in 2nd sometimes. Tranny shop hooked it back up and took it for a test drive. The TPS was jumping.
Under the hood we look and the mount directly under the TPS is cracked. I can wobble the TPS which causes the voltage as read thru the OBD port to jump from .53 to .59
Tranny shop also said it's not getting Wide Open Throttle. I can believe that as this weekend on the highway I could roll along at 70 but not get any steam up to pass if needed.
Tranny shop said there was an update to the TPS as this is a common failure.
I took it to the dealer near me and they really didn't tell me too much other than there was an updated TPS bracket and mount; wanted me to leave the truck for repairs though they didn't know what parts it needed, if they had them, and their diesel guy wasn't in.
No thanks.
Went to the only other dealership in town. The service writer and parts guy were confused. Their parts reader didn't show a TPS mount, but did show the bushings. They didn't know of an updated mount or bracket set up. They had a tranny guy come out to look at it. He said the wobble in the TPS was ok, adjusted the valve body cable (tranny place had already done that 3 times) and we went for a ride.
It started in 1st gear as it should so no charge and on my trip I went. I no sooner and left and the tranny acted up with searching for higher gear too soon or not shifting soon enough and wound itself out. On the highway, I wasn't getting WOT as I should.
Still with me?
1. Is there an updated TPS mount/bracket for the 12V?
2. Would a wobbly TPS be the cause of my ills?
3. How do I get just the half of the TPS mount?
Thanks for your patience in reading this.

The tps voltage should be at 1.0 v + or - .2. I prefer the higher setting. There is a complete pkg for the throttle assy it is very pricey and comes with parts that are not used in our application also.Try to fix what is broken first. There are 2 nylon bushings that are available separately and don't cost much.

I read an article on sonnax a few minutes ago that said to read thru the TPS alone and not thru the OBD port. They didn't say why.
I'm not getting WOT which bothers me. I measured the distance between the throttle ball and backing plate to 5". It was off a little but not much. The linkage moves the whole time, not just to half throttle. My pedal isn't that far off the floor nor is there a lot of room to move it. Somethings fishy.
