Turbo making a blowing sound
Turbo making a blowing sound
I have a 2005 CTD, and was towing my 5th wheel home this weekend. The turbo started making a blowing sound under acceleration. I'd hear the normal whine while cruising at 1600-1800 RPM, then the whine would turn to a blowing sound as I hit 2100+ RPM. It almost sounded like a vent inside the passenger side of the cab was blowing, if that helps diagnose the issue.
I can't quite tell if I lost power when this kicked in or not. Once or twice it felt like the case, but those were steeper climbs.
Thanks in advance.

Note that after quite a few towing trips, this is the first time I've ever heard it. And this is not the hottest weather I've towed in either. I forgot to mention that I can now reproduce the effect when NOT towing. Same RPM range.
Also, this is a stock truck. Only thing aftermarket is the hitch and air bags...

Ahh, that is a horse of another color. Have you pulled the intake hose off the turbo and checked for anything out of the ordinary? Does the turbine spin freely, any play in the shaft, oil collecting inside the turbo (this indicate and seal/bearing going south on ya).

Check the clamps that hold the hoses on to the intercooler. If they aren't good and tight, they can leak and that will give you the blowing sound.
Been there and done that.
