transmission problem

I just bought a 1995 2500 with a 4 speed automatic transmission. There is a rod poking out the back.Approx 1/2" diameter. It is just above the pan on the passanger side. It was poking out about 5 or 6 inches. I pushed it back in.there are 2 groves in it. Look like they could accept a c clip. they are both still showing. I don't know if its all the way in or not. Or if I should still drive it.
any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Someone told me this was a strut pin anchor and apparently it's ok to use it except in reverse or manual first. Hope he's right. Apparently I can put it back into place if I remove the pan. I'll give that a crack and see what happens.
