Transmission problem or engine problem

Twice in the past several months I've experienced the following problem but under different circumstances. The first time I started out from a stop light on a slight incline (maybe 2% grade for 1/2 mile). The truck started out ok but then as I increased throttle I could not gain speed and the transmission would not shift. It felt like it wasn't in the right gear to begin with (OD was disengaged). I managed to get to the top of the incline and on the flat but even then could not gain speed even with the throttle just about to the floor. I tried manually shifting but that didn't work either. After a few miles, just as I was about to pull off the road, speed started to increase and when I reached about 55 I was able to engage OD with no problem and from then on everything was normal.
From that time I drove about 7000 miles with no further problem until last week. This second incident happened while I was driving on an interstate at around 60/65 mph in OD when I came again to a minor grade of about 2 or 3 %. I increased throttle to gain speed for the grade but just like in July, speed and rpm's started to decrease. When I got down to 55 mph I manually disengaged OD but still could not gain speed and the transmission would not shift. Again the throttle was just about to the floor. After several miles of this, once again speed started to increase and after getting back up to around 55 I dropped it into OD again and have not had the problem since. Both times I was towing the 5th wheel. A good part of the 7000 miles between incidents was also towing. Have not noticed any unusal noise or vibration. Transmission fluid appears normal (red, no burnt smell). I have the tranny completely serviced every 15000 miles. Tranny temp. at both times was around 155 (in pan sensor). Truck has about 57000 miles on it.
Thanks for any input.

Those symptoms are new to me, but it sounds like "limp mode". I have never had one do it, nor know of any of the trucks I have messed with doing it. It is my understanding that limp mode will cause the tranny to start in 2nd and lock out OD. You could have a bad temp sensor in the tranny, high temp reading causes the limp mode. You need a tranny temp gauge anyway, I would start there if you don't have one. Hopefully someone with more extensive automatic tranny knowledge will chime in here.

dogman:

I think that I have had the same thing happen to me 3-4 times. It also happened when I was towing my 5th wheel. With mine, it has only done it for a short amount of time and only after having the truck shut down for a short period (for fuel, food, etc.). When I first pull out, it seems like I only have about 1/4 throttle even with the pedal to the floor. Then, after maybe 30-40 seconds, the truck will start to pull like normal. Mine is definitely not transmission, it has something to do with the engine. Mine has only started to do this after I added the Edge Ez. I suspect that it has something to do with the Ez and will be calling Edge to try to sort it out. The other issue that I thought of is possibly a problem with the throttle position sensor(?). Even when I can't seem to get full power, the truck runs fine (no missing, etc.) Good luck.

Re:Transmission problem or engine problem

When my boost sensor died i had these symptoms.
I could not rev above 1500 unless in neutral.
If you cant hear the turbo spool up, it may be your problem.

Re:Transmission problem or engine problem

Sounds like a lack of fuel or boost, I would add a fuel pressure and boost gauge.

I heard a story once about a guy who had the same symtoms but with a gaser. Seems someone put a baloon in his tank, while driving along the baloon would suck up against the fuel line causing the mill to shut down. After a while when the baloon would settle away from the line he could start up and go until it happend again. That would be a real head scratcher fer sure!.

I would think your problem is mechanical rather than electrical myself only because you say there was 7000 miles between incodents.

I just wonder if this has somthing to do with the fuel you was running at the time.

Just something to think about.

dogman mine has done something like that but it wasn't when i first started out,i couldn't get it to go back into od after a long climb unless i was kinda/alot off the throttle.Remember they shift according to voltage. ;D

Unhappy

I just went to the snow and my truck started to do the same thing. I noticed my check engine light came on too. As I'm typing I have disconnected the batteries and see if it will reset the system

Mine is running great once I get rolling, but just getting to roll takes allot of foot on the throttle.

This is my first week with my EZ installed. If disconnecting the batteries doesn't work I'll remove the EZ.

It worked!

I guess after the check engine light came on that it went to limp mode. I disconnected the batteries for 45 min and everything works well!
