Major transmission problem
Major transmission problem
Well i have finally started to modify my truck, and decided to start with the transmission. Bought a well known torque converter and valve body kit. After driving about 50-60 miles,i wiped out the rear band and overrunning clutch hub. The rear servo was applying in 3rd gear. rebuilt trans and replaced valve body with known good one (to eliminate possible cross over in valve body circuit) ,i went about 3 -4 miles after fresh overhaul only to bind up and wipe out the rear band again.after checking rear servo pressures again,i find that the rear servo is getting pressure during 3 rd gear. Well i figure i have a cracked case now and have ordered a reman trans, My concern is the only item that i may have overlooked and that is the intermediate accumulator. The V/B kit came with a aluminum accumulator and even though the directions never showed to install it,i figured it should go in. Now even though it fits snug and used trans gel for lube to get it in,it fits tighter as it does not fall out under gravity like the OEM plasic one does. My main question is this normal?,should i reuse it for the reman trans? and this increased snugness possibly what has cause a crack in the rear servo apply area, right next to the accumulator? Help please. After haveing the trans out already twice, and now a third time. I haven't driven the truck in over a week and am VERY shy about the out come with the raman. Thanks
I don't know about the accumulator, but I would strongly recomend that you contact your tranny supplier and discuss your concerns with them. If it is one of the "big 4" then you should have no problem getting straight answers from any of them. Good luck and let us know what the outcome is.

Transmission fixed. I put a reman tran in. Transmission, torque converter, valve body and controller all work well. Near as i can tell the case had cracked. Why ? i don't know. I did not put the aluminum accumulator piston back into the new trans as i would have had to tap it(pound is more like it) back into the trans. I for one am not a fan of beating parts into a transmission, and i am a little gun shy after the last experience.
