Tailgate Troubles

Its been pretty cold for the last couple weeks (-10 to -20F)...after hauling some stuff today I put up the tailgate and it wouldnt latch. Pulling on the handle doesnt seem to move the latches either?? Never had one apart (and its too cold to tackle it right now)...any ideas?

Thanks.

Are the latches stuck closed or open?

WD-40, the miracle drug, and a little excersizing of the mechanism might work.

If that doesn't work, you'll have to get into the guts of the tailgate,
which won't be fun in the cold.

I bet something just got a little water in it and froze.

Why not take the gate off the truck and bring it inside where it's warm? That'll cure it if it's just frozen.

There are little plastic clips that keep the operating rods in the linkage - one of those may have broken allowing the linkage to fall apart.

"Honey, why is there a tailgate on the dinner table?"

Should be a lot easier to get the tailgate off in the bitter cold then taking it apart in the bitter cold.

Well now I think my brain is a little frozen......I should have thought of that. You the man Dave !

The only problem is, if I bring it inside it might never go back on the truck since we could use a new coffee table

At least it will match my new batteries that are stiing in the front enterance.

yeah, those little latches like to get stiff and seize up at inopportune moments... a little squirt of PB blaster, and you're good to go. on my 1st gen, I had the little clips on the actuator rods that connect to the handle break... that was fun... pretty easy fix, but it was really annoying when it happened!

Couldnt get the gate off.....is there a trick? Its getting dark - I assume it comes off from the passenger side??? I guess I dont have to worry about someone stealing it...

Sprayed some lock deicer on the latches and the latches move fine but wont latch....spent too many hours in the cold today so I gave up....

Have I told ya how much I hate winter??? Man, Im livin in the wrong place.

if it won't open, it's probably in the linkage... a broken clip or two

As to getting it off the truck.

Remove the cables.

Somewhere between 1/4 open and 1/2 open you should be able to lift one side free of the hinge.

I've never had mine off though, so I could be talking out of my bum.

ahh, if it won't close, it's probably just those latches at the end...

on the pass side, there's a little notch in the ring that rides on the post attatched to the bed... hold the tailgate at around a 45* angle and lift up/out on the pass side... once it comes out, you can pull the driver's side off the post by pulling towards the pass side.

oh yeah, you'll obviously want to remove the cables first! LOL!
