If I recall this correctly there is either a sensor on the rear axle or a sensor on the transmission output shaft that signals the speed to the tranny and the speedo .

Look for these sensors and clean them (might have debris on them because they are magnetic)

There could be a problem with your crank position sensor, it is located directly above the harmomnic balancer on the passenger side.Either the sensor is bad or the wire harness to it is cracked or the gap is to big between it and the balancer. If there is no output from this the 'puter thinks your engine isn't running and therefore it doesn't turn on anything ie; guages, alternator, tach tranny

Did you lose the tach as well?

Im thinking that changing a 95 should be the same as a 99:

First check your sensor and Connections.....the tranny WILL not lock-up or go into o/d without the proper VSS signal....Wire could be broken as well.

I see hes running an AAM differential....would that make a difference in the VSS signal?

VSS is in the tailshaft/t-case in the early models, no? I know my 5-spd out of the 94 has a sensor on the tailshaft for speedo. Isn't the sensor in the rear in the early trucks strictly for ABS?

Later models use a combination of the two sensors for the speedometer.

Rear is used for ABS and speedo, tailshaft is used for transmission shifting and speedo.
