Oil pressure gauge

Recently, I noticed that when I would turn on the key, the oil pressure guage would sometimes return to the pressure when the engine was last running. This happens about 1/2 the time. I am preparing to leave on a fairly long trip (3K miles) and will be pulling our 5th wheel. Yesterday, I took it to the "*******" as it is about out of warranty (97,500 miles). They thought it needed a new sender which they said would be $290 installed. Thought this was a bit much. I did get the mechanic to show me where the sender was supposed to be. I read the posts by 1032 a few days ago regarding not having any oil pressure and looked a the photos that Shovelhead had posted. I have the 99, 24-V engine, but the photo of that engine did not indicate which was the oil pressure sender. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re:Oil pressure gauge

May have solved my problem, or at least for the moment. Located the general area of the sender and by feel found 2 wires connected to something on the block. I had left the key on and the gauge was showing normal oil pressure. I wiggled the wires and tried to move the plug they went into. After crawling down out of the engine compartment, the oil pressure now read 0 lbs. Started the engine several times and the gauge now seems to be working normally. Would have thought the mechanic at the "*******" would have done that for the $40 they charged me. They also charged me $40 to check the fuel pressure from the lift pump. They said it was OK with 14 lb at 3K rpm.

Re:Oil pressure gauge

If the work ticket said check oil pressure guage, the "Mechanic" probably said "Yup....it's right there in the dash were it's supposed to be.......
