Oil pressure sending unit failure? high oil pressure, high oil level?

Driving about 20 MPH through a parking lot and check gauges light comes on and oil pressure goes to zero. Before I could pull over, it came back up.

Put the oil pressure on my EDGE Attitude and it reads 99 PSI. About 75 on the gauge in the truck.

Then drove another 5 miles back. Just figured the sending unit crapped out.

Checked oil, looked way high on the dipstick. So, I changed the oil and but only about 9 or 10 quarts came out. I've never been able to fit much over 10 in it.

Absolutely no smell of diesel or antifreeze. Oil looked clean.

So, I'm assuming I don't have a leaky injector or blown head gasket.

Drove home. Was reading 70 lbs on the EDGE, but after a few miles went up 99-100 lbs. Then after another few miles, the gauge on the truck stopped working and the check gauges light came on. The EDGE still read 99 PSI. Then when I got home still no oil pressure, then all of a sudden it bumps way back up to were it was before.

Sending unit is $160. Is that the problem?

Or could it be something with the oil pump?

Also, when you put the key in the on position it still reads like 90 psi? Does it usually read something when the engine is not running but the key is on?

Thanks guys

Its your sending unit. Mine dosen't work either the guage is just pegged all the time the key is on engine running or not. And every once in a while the guage will wig out and bounce around and the check guages light comes on.

I'd be concerned about that! Is there a year difference or are all the CTD's 12qt?

Including oil filter, mine will take 12qt (3gal) to fill it to the top line of the dipstick.

Dumb question, but when you checked the oil level on the dipstick, did you wip it off and then re-check it?

Many times if the thing has set for a period, the stick will clean itself, but if you just stop and pull the stick, it reads way high until you clean it and re check, then it shows the proper level.

Changed the sensor. Everything is good.

Don't know about the dipstick. Seems way more accurate when cold. When warm its harder to tell.
