No Power steering and hard brake pedal

Truck has been parked for a week, come to move it this morning, nearly shot me through the house wall.I had to stand on the brakes,as if the servo or what ever was not working. While reversing back relised the truck has lost its power steering, when trying to turn in the yard it just threw fluid out of the fluid reservoir filler cap.Any ideas please as to where to start trouble shooting. The downside to all this,is that yesterday I booked the ferry for next Saturday for a two week trip to France with the trailer, and if I cannot get it sorted the trip is off. Thanks in advance Van

Sounds like you need a new power steering pump or at least the one you have rebuilt.

Coupler Gear between vacuum pump and ps pump

Check out the "fixinrams.com" website. If you shear the ears of the coupler gear you will end up with the exact symptoms you have. Hope this helps.

Did you change anything??? If not DON'T wait until Friday... You more than likely have a failed power steering pump that's working again, been there done that own the t-shirt. You won't like driving let alone towing anything with no power anything. It's a common problem, I'd replace the pump just to be safe.

Good luck.

The same exact thing happened to me about a year ago. I had it towed to work since I couldn't drive it with no brakes. When it came down off the flatbed, it was working again. It's been fine ever since. I never did find out what caused it.

Sometimes turning the wheel with the engine off will cause air to enter the system and air lock the PS pump. This also causes fluid to puke out of the top of the reservoir.
Problem cures itself.

Thanks for more info,up until Thursday I`m on fifteen hour shifts ,so the truck will have to wait while Friday. When I have serviced the truck to be honest I`v never paid any attention to the power steering, all the cars that I have owned and the six heavys I have operated over the last 25 years, have never given me any problems with the power steering so I have tended to ignore doing anything with the power steering system. Just started the truck tonight and the steering and brakes are normal, hopefully mine will be like Mudmans experience. When I said the truck has been parked a week,in that week it will have been shunted about the yard a few times,so Infidels comments hopefully might be pertinent to my truck. Thanks again Van.

I've been through the same thing. Replace the pump.
