No downshift, stall, no start

Greetings,

This usually isn't the best way to introduce oneself on a forum, but I could really use some help in getting my truck going again, with some peace of mind at least. So here's the situation....

I took a loop to get on another freeway and as I accelerated to get back up to speed the truck would not down shift. I pulled over, hit the over drive off button and it drove fine. I then released the O/D off button and it was running fine in overdrive. As I got off the freeway and came to a light, it would not downshift again and it stalled, and would not start. No clicking, no starter, nothing.
I had power to lights, windows, dash etc. No smoke, 15psi fuel pressure at idle, new battery, good connections, no crazy tachometer fluctations????
I got it off the tow truck and it started fine!!!, so I pulled it in the driveway. I can turn it on, and shift through drive, reverse, etc. and it will not stall right now. Everything seems fine, but I don't feel alright about driving it and having to get another tow until I have some direction. Any and all help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
John

Sig is under the User CP in the top right corner of screen. Sounds like maybe there is a ground problem, or a loose power connection somewhere. Start jigglin' wires and see if you can make it stall in the driveway. Intermittent problems are the worst! Any codes? To get codes you turn the key ( not cranking the engine any of the times ) from off/on, off/on. off/on, off then on and leave it on. Any codes should appear in the odo screen. Be a good place to start at least.

Did it pound real bad when you stopped at the light? If it did the TC could be seized...I have no other explanation for what your saying happened.

Thanks vzdude for the info on sig. I'll get that up shortly.

As far as ground problems go, I replaced my ground wire that goes from the front of the block to the driver's side battery a few months ago, and have been checking on all of the wiring lately as I've learned more about what makes these trucks act up. I've also got a new Optima battery, and all connections are very tight. That was one of my first suspicions when it died, electrical.

When it died, it was very much like a stall when not pushing in the clutch on a manual, pretty much right when I came to a stop. Nothing abrupt or violent, just shut off, and would not restart. It was also fairly warm, around 85-90F, and the freeway was one of those bumpy ones where the front end just jiggles everything to hell. So vibration and heat may be involved in a way......

As far as I know, the key trick only works on 2001 or 2000 and newer, not on my '99. I haven't driven it out to go check codes, but am very tempted to if I have time tonight, including possible tow truck time.

The more I've thought about what happened, it seems to me that the TC locked in overdrive, caused me to stall, and was stuck until the tow truck winched my rig onto the flat bed, and then off again. Does that makes sense? I'm not much of a tranny guy.
If I don't figure something out in the next couple days I'm heading to the tranny shop for diagnostics.
Thanks for your help!
John

That makes sense, but the thing that is bothering me about that, is that it wouldn't crank, or even hear the starter click. That leads me to think electrical. Let us know what you find out! I'll help as much as I can! As I'm sure others will too!

Thanks vz.
Sometimes all we need is a little moral support to help us feel like we're not alone. I hate not having a clue what is wrong.
I plan on tinkering with it again tonight, and towing it to the tranny doctor on Thursday.
I'll post back when I find something out.
Thanks again for all the help.

So I started the truck two days ago in the driveway, ran it through all the gears, and everything seemed fine.
Today, after speaking with my tranny mechanic, I decided to take it out for a little drive, and again, NO START. It hasn't moved since I started it two days ago
I have power to lights, windows, dash, FASS, etc.
Anyone had this experience? Any tips on what to look for?

Does your blower motor work when it won't start? The blower is fed by the same fuse/circuit as the starter feed. There have been some known problems with the ignition switch and wiring.

Not sure about the blower working or not, but I'll check that when I get home. My A/C hasn't blown cold for about a month now, so I haven't bothered with turning on the air.
Thanks for the tip, I'll see what I can find.

The starter was bad, as well as the tranny speed sensor. Took me about a week of scrathing my head, pissing the girlfriend off, and crawlin' around under the truck, but it's fixed now.
Amazing that both these things crapped out on the same day!!!
