Torque Converter Stall/Flash Stall speed
I'd like any input from you guys that have aftermarket torque converters installed and what kind of Stall/Flash Stall speed your seeing and what kind of RPM drop between shifts before the converter locks.
The rebuilder put a Pro Torque converter in that’s supposed to have a low stall speed, but I'm seeing WOT shift at 2800 rpm and maybe a 100 rpm drop between shifts making around 20psi of boost(engine will make over 30 when locked). I back out of it before I lock to converter because that’s alot of slippage, 2800 unlocked at 50 mph is around 1900 locked, that’s almost 1000 rpm drop.
I feel that the stock converter that was installed previously pulled better unlocked.
I've brought it to their attention, their going to look at for me.
The only explanation I can think of is either the converter really is junk or it was built wrong.
Any Ideas or help is appreciated
Thanks
Mike

I want to bump this too the top and maybe someone will comment on it.
A little update. I ask the rebuilder who builds this converter and he beats around the bush, so I was mistaken before when I said it was a Pro Torque.
The rebuilder has looked at and says its fine. I even rode with him on the test drive and told him its not. He says 1200 rpm stall speed, maybe without a turbo.
I pulled my trailer this weekend, gross weight around 20,000. It pulls just fine around 50 mph with the converter locked. I had to pull one hill with the converter unlocked and it was wide open 2800 rpm's at 40 mph. I can only imagine the trans temperatures, because the water temp went up very quickly.
But I also notice between shifts I only drop maybe 200 rpms from 2800 to 2600.
Any help would be appreciated. and any info to help me prove that theres something wrong would be great.
Thanks
Mike

sounds like a stock replacement converter to me...they drop abour 200 rpm during shifts and have about a 1500 stall speed
you have to rememebr though the more torque you put to a converter the higher its going to stall. I am not sure what hp/tq they rate them at. If you had 160 hp 400 ft lbs it may stall at 1200 but if you have 190/485 it may stall at 1450...so the rating isnt always accurate

Drop the inspection pan - should be 3 small bolts, say maybe a 5/16 socket and look at the converter. I have a Protorque extreme and it is black. You can "bar" the engine over with flat head screwdriver on the flywheel teeth to look for the Protorque label that they put on the side of the unit.

It used to pull really good with 300's and #4 plate. I added the 370's and the stall seems to have increased. Probably putting too much torque through it. If I were to have to replace it, I'd give a good look a Goerend. The only other TC that's been in a truck that I've rode in is a DTT which seemed tighter than the protorque.
