new vp44 now it won't start

installed a new vp44 in a 98 dodge diesel, and i couldn't get it to fire, i shot a small amount of starting fluid and she started for a second or 2 then shut off.

i loosened all the injector lines and shes spraying diesel out of the holes if i loosen it off then try and start it. i just put a guage on his lift pump and i bump the starter and i'm getting 15 psi, then i let off it and bumped the starter again and i only got 4.5 psi that time and the third time i bumped it went to 4.5 psi again and then made a funny noise and shot up to 13 psi.

i'm thinking its the lift pump, anyone else agree with me here?

thanks
sean

i know my lift pump is slow about pressure building but as long as it maintains 4 the lift pump is okay i think.

does the lift pump keep running after you try and crank it making a rrrrrrrr noise?

Double check the connection from the harness to the injection pump.
Sometimes it seems like it connected.........
It's tough to get it juuuuuust right.

i agree, from what you describe it sounds like your lift pump is good the odd noise its making is probably just because the system is already primed but the pump is still pushing fuel (if that makes any sense) mine does that if i bump it a couple times. if your getting fuel to the injectors its most likely electrical, especially since you just installed the pump.

i took it back out and checked the timing, it had slipped. fixed that problem put it back in, got it running. everything was great. sold him my van aaken chip he drove it around all night and loved it to peices. he hooked on to his fifth wheel this morning started going and everything was great. got 3/4 up the big hill leaving town he kicked down a gear and died just like that. he said it was if someone turned the truck off. so i went out there this morning and theres NO fuel at the lines now. checked the lift pump and its shooting tons of diesel. pulled the oil collector off the front there and had him bump it and everything is spinning good there. pulled the code p1684. took the chip out.. plugged it in. still nothing. checked the plug in and its good. talked to a tech rep down south and he said there shipping me a new one. so frustrating for me and the customer. i've never had a pump give me so much trouble ever.

I'm not sure about your specific problem, but I did my Vp44 last winter it went off without a hitch. no problem at all. But You can't have the timing slip on a VP44, thats impossible. Its electronic timing. The gear is keyed to the shaft......or you mean the drive gear had jumped a tooth on the gear train when you were installing it?

the key came out when putting it on. so the shaft spun on the gear 180 degrees before stopping.

Just for future reference, would a tiny dab of yellow 3M on the shaft keyway hold the key in place?

Talking

That's my luck, it would fall off and bust up my timing gears.
