Question Injector pump

My truck is idling erratically and surges at highway speeds. Just happened all of a sudden today. Engine light came on. Cruise wont engage, wont go into overdrive and lost tons of power. I limped it home and upon shutdown the pump ran for about 20 seconds before shutting off. When I bumped the engine. It ran again for about 30 seconds. Is it the pump or what does anyone think Im looking at? Its a 2000 24 valve. It still starts and runs but a little erratic. I had a cool camping/ fishing trip planned starting tommorow but it looks like I will spend my time at the dealer on monday. I have been told its under warranty until 100,000. Its got 78,000 so if this is what it is. It should be covered. (I HOPE!!!)

Need more info.

Assuming it is a 24valve, since the 12 valve lift pumps don't run when you bump the starter.

Also, the year of the truck decides how you have to retrieve the code(s) indicated by the check engine light.

In mid June I had a similar problem – loss of power climbing hills, running sluggish (but no warning lights). Discussed with mech. and thought it might be water in fuel. Changed fuel filter & ran a couple quarts of fuel additive in next few tanks. Seemed to take care of the problem. Then it happened again, repeated fuel additive – it stopped. Then it happened again last week, and I noticed fuel not being pumped when ignition turned on. Took it to dealer, they said the fuel transfer pump was bad, and replaced it ($640). They also kindly informed me that the injector pump may be the next to go!! What a joy!!

2000, 2500 quad, 4x4, 99k miles. All stock - no modifications

It always amazes me the prices these shops charge for simple work like changing a lift pump/fuel filter highway robbery I say.

Yeah and that why most of us do our own work on our trucks! I was being charged $120 for a fuel filter!

Now I know why I hang out here on this web site!
