Fuel related or injector pump question?

My Dodge desiel started missing a little and I thought maybe I got some bad fuel. I changed the fuel filter and things got worse. It now shuts down while blowing white smoke just before shut down. This happened 4 times today coming home from work. I think maybe the injector pump might be going out, this would cause the white smoke due to a lean condition. I am not sure and thought I would ask some of you on your thoughts.

Thanks for any info you might have.

Also, the year of the truck and engine would help diagnose.

12 valve, 24 valve, 3rd gen common rail?

jman, I am in Deltona, Fl.

phox_mulder sorry for the lack of info. It is a 2001 Dually 4x4, 24 valve, 6 speed.
Also when it shuts down, if I put the throttle to the floor, it will start back up. Fuel is getting to the filter.

Sounds like the injector pump. Mine acted a lot like that when it died. No power, release or punch the pedal and it came back on line. Didn't get the white smoke. Pull your codes and go from there. P0216 is the "death" code.
Mine ended up being the injection timing circuit card (or what ever it's called) on the pump. The entire pump got replaced, free.

Its in death mode for sure, it wont start now. Its going to the dealer under warrenty in the morning. Hard to beleive with only 49,000 miles on it. Then I hear that some people lost theirs with under 20,000 miles. I had to get the computer back to stock, no programmer from superchips because they still had it on their laptop. Crazy day for sure.
Thanks for the info guys.
