Lift pump question? related to topic below

so I believe my LP is toast lovely I was just trying to do the right thing and install a FP fitting and guage, (see below) now my question is after I get a new LP is it possible that it is gonna break again while trying to prime and bleed the air filled injectors? both my lP and VP are orig. $ 135k miles so a broken LP is par for the corse I guess

Its great that you're putting in a FP gauge, if I can put in my .02, don't bother with an original style lift pump (engine mount) get a fass hplp or raptor and don't worry about it any more. An engine mount lp WILL fail much quicker that the ones I mentioned.

I would buy a GOOD aftermarket lift pump. I'm patial to FASS but there other good ones out there. Cheap insurance in the long run. Now to answer your question. While there are no gurantees especially with a stock replacement pump, a new pump should be able to prime and purge the system without a problem. Key the ignition switch just far enough to "bump" the starter after you swap out the lift pump. The bump will run the pump for some 20-25 seconds and purge the LP to IP lines. Once or twice outta do 'er.

If you are looking for a cheap alternative to the FASS and/or Raptor, try an Aeromotive AEI11203 which is a 16 psi pump for under $200.00. Mine is mounted on the frame rail Utilizing a Geno's Garage relocation kit. The kit was for the old stock LPs but got tired of replacing them out all of the time. This one is appx 2 years old and over 80K on the diesel side.

It rarely pulls down to 9-10 psi at WOT and 16 psi at idle. I do have a FASS HPHF veggie pump on the VO side na dhave been inpressed with the FASS. If this Aermotive pump dies, I'll use a standard FASS on the diesel side however.

I bought a procomp black for $60 on ebay. Took out the screen inside and added an inline filter before the pump. Put a moroso 19lb spring in it and it sits a 20lbs at idle and drops to 15-16 at wot. I've had it for about a month and so far so good.

Ok I hope people check back to see this because this truck is still not running I just installed a new LP an upgraded carter pump, getting about 2.5 psi to the guage, which is an electronic sending unit for inside the cab (fuel Pressure)and then it drops to nothing after a about a minute, thinking I have a leak somewhere, now my injectors are getting a little bit of fuel to them but not what i'd expect, guessing because of the previously mentioned fp I really hope the VP44 isn't toast/ any thoughts?

I haven't followed your earlier post about this problem, but have you checked the overflow valve in the fuel return line on the side of the VP? Change fuel filter? The pressure is supposed to drop to 0 when the LP is turned off, there is a bleed hole in the overflow valve. With the LP running and the engine off I think the only return path is through the overflow valve. (Maybe someone can verify this). You could try to do a flow test by taking the banjo bolt out and putting the banjo in milk jug (diesel @ 5.00 a gallon) and test running the lift pump to see how much the pump is flowing. Could be the sock on the fuel pickup in the tank is plugged up. Yea, I'm ramblin'. Hope I gave you some ideas though.

I am reading about draing out air in the system in the haynes manual, the thing with the situation is the truck ran fine not sure whether the lp was toasted but it ran and started w/o a problem before i took it upon myself to crack open the system to install a fp fitting and guage, so I dont know why the overflow valve would go I am trying to be logical because money is a problem right now, but i guess logic is out of the question with these engines

well Thanks for the offer I just got it running though however i have a question maybe alot easier to answer,

on a whim, i removed the fuel filter and put the top back on after filling up the whole resevoir with diesel, after some pedal to the floor action and alittle stumbeling it started and ran perfectly does this make any sense? with the filter out, now I am afraid to take the lid off to put one back in (which I know I have to do) because I dont want this to happen again

two other things the guage reads 18 psi and about 16or less when on it, no towing test as of yet,

I did the key on-key off for codes for s---ts and giggles and got 1689, 0230,0217 any idea what they mean, I am searching as we speak

Wow, sure sounds like you filter is plugged. Don't run it without a filter. The holes in the injectors are so small you need a magnifying glass to see 'em and they plug up real easy. Glad ya got her runnin'. :-)

P0230 Transfer Pump (Lift Pump) Circuit
Out of Range
Problem detected in fuel transfer pump circuits.

P0217 Decreased Engine Performance Due
To Engine Overheat Condition
Engine overheating. ECM will derate engine performance

P1689 (M) No Communication Between ECM
and Injection Pump Module
Data link circuit failure between ECM and fuel injection
pump. Low power, engine derated, or engine stops.

Try clearing them and see if they come back. Ya could get lucky.
